Softball Team Runs Win Streak to Six

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team ran its winning streak to six by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from North Park University. Elmhurst won the opening game 3-2 before taking the night cap 12-6.
 
The Bluejays improved to 12-16 overall and 5-7 in league play while North Park dropped to 11-22 overall and 3-8 in the CCIW.
 
ELMHURST 2, NORTH PARK 0 (Game One) – Emily Despain pitched a complete game as the Bluejays held off North Park 3-2 in game one.
 
Elmhurst jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on Alyssa Ressinger's RBI single. The Bluejays doubled their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Erin Steik drove home Mia Riese with an RBI single to right field.

An error on North Park opened the door for the Bluejays to tack on an insurance run in the sixth. Val Perrelli delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to put Elmhurst in front 3-0.
 
North Park took advantage of an Elmhurst error in the seventh to score a pair of unearned runs with two outs, but Despain enduced Hayley Jackson to fly out to center to end the ballgame.

Veronica Zahn recorded two hits for the Bluejays in the victory.
 
Despain went the distance, allowing just two unearned runs. She scattered eight hits, did not issue a walk and struck out four while improving to 8-6 on the season.
 
ELMHURST 12, NORTH PARK 6 (Game Two) – Elmhurst finished the doubleheader sweep of North Park with a 12-6 win in game two.
 
Elmhurst wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard, plating four runs in the top of the first to race out to a quick 4-0 lead. Alyssa Ressinger's fielder's choice put Elmhurst up 1-0. Tara Cannella knocked in two runs with a single up the middle and the second Viking error of the inning allowed the Bluejays' final run of the inning to score.

The Vikings answered back immediately, scoring four times with two outs. A two-out homer From Jackson cut the Bluejays' lead in half. Four straight infield singles and two wild pitches led to three more runs for the Vikings.
 
Elmhurst quickly regained the lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs on four hits. Run-scoring singles from Rebekah Ondracek, Alyssa Ressinger and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Mia Riese gave Elmhurst a 7-5 lead.  Ondracek singled home another run in the third to extend Elmhurst's lead to 8-5.
 
North Park got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to close to within two, but Elmhurst answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Zahn doubled home a run and came in to score on a North Park error to put Elmhurst in front 10-6.
 
Elmhurst pulled away in the seventh by tacking on two insurance runs. The fourth error of the game by the Vikings allowed the first run to score for the Bluejays while Ressinger drove in the final run with a a sacrifice fly.
 
Zahn and Cannella led the Bluejays at the plate with three hits apiece. Ressinger drove in three runs in the win while Cannella and Ondracek drove in two runs apiece. Zahn and Erin Steik scored three runs each for the Bluejays.
 
Despain upped her record to 9-6 on the season with the win. She made the start and worked four innings, allowing nine hits and six runs. She did not issue a walk while striking out two. Bailee Krantz pitched three scoreless innings of relief to record the save. Krantz allowed just two hits while striking out one.
 
Elmhurst hosts Kalamazoo College on Saturday, April 21.
