PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team swept a doubleheader from Trinity Christian College, winning game one 5-1 and taking game two in a slugfest 13-12.
Elmhurst upped its record to 8-16 with the two wins while Trinity Christian fell to 10-19 overall.
ELMHURST 5, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 1 (Game One) - The Bluejays scored three runs in the first inning and tacked on two runs in the fifth to take the opening game 5-1.
Tara Cannella started the scoring with an RBI in the first inning and
Faith Thompson followed with a two-run single to stake Elmhurst to an early 3-0 lead.
The Bluejays added two runs in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single from Cannella.
Val Perrelli and
Veronica Zahn added two hits apiece for the Bluejays in the win while Cannella totaled three RBIs.
Emily Despain picked up the win from the circle, limiting Trinity Christian to just five hits and one unearned run while tossing a complete game. Despain walked two while striking out five.
ELMHURST 13, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 12 (Game Two) - Elmhurst held off a rally from Trinity Christian to finish the doubleheader sweep with a 13-12 victory.
Elmhurst trailed 7-3 after three innings, but the Bluejays turned the tables in the fourth sending 14 batters to the plate and hanging 10 runs on the scoreboard. Two-run doubles from
Rebekah Ondracek and
Mia Riese helped spark the Bluejays' big inning.
The Trolls mounted a rally in the bottom of the fourth scoring five runs to pull to within one, but the Trolls came no closer as the Bluejays finished of the sweep.
Thompson and Cannell totaled three hits apiece in the win. Thompson drove in two while Cannella added an RBI. Ondracek added two hits, scored two runs and drove in three.
Alyssa Ressinger added two hits and drove in two while Riese and
Ellie Braun also collected two hits.
Stefania Passarelli earned the win in relief for the Bluejays, allowing four hits and two unearned runs in two innings of work. She walked one and fanned one. Despain pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out two.
Elmhurst hosts Wheaton College at Rosemont's Bandits Stadium on Tuesday, April 17.
