Bluejays Falter Against Loras

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's lacrosse team slid to 4-4 on the season after falling 14-9 to Loras College at Langhorst Field. 

Loras (4-3) outscored Elmhurst 7-3 in the opening half to seize control of the contest. The Duhawks struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on a Sarah Hanson goal just 2:14 into the match. The Bluejays pulled even less than two minutes later on a Grace Knoebel goal. 

Back-to-back goals from Olivia Flynn and Renata Veljacic gave the Duhawks a two-goal cushion but Knoebel's second goal of the game, coming off an Isabel Walker assist, cut Loras' lead in half midway through the half. 

The Duhawks scored the next four goals, extending their lead to five in the process. Knoebel scored her third of the half with 2:21 left to bring Elmhurst to within four at halftime. 

Loras opened the second half on a 5-1 run to open up an eight-goal advantage. Knoebel scored back-to-back goals for the Bluejays to cut the Duhawks lead down to six, but Flynn scored with 10 minutes remaining to push the Duahwks back in front by seven. 

Elmhurst outscored Loras 3-1 in the final 10 minutes to make the final score 14-9. 

Loras outshot Elmhurst 32-24 and held a 30-21 edge in ground balls. Both teams struggled to maintain possession as the two squads combined for 63 turnovers. Elmhurst gave the ball up 36 times, including 24 in the opening half. 

Knoebel powered Elmhurst's offense in the loss, finishing with a team-leading five goals. Larissa Arvanites added two goals for the Bluejays while walker finished with three points on a goal and two assists. Ellen Brown finished with a goal while also totaling five draw controls and six ground balls. Megan Keener took the loss in net, despite recording 13 saves. 

Flynn and Veljacic combined for 10 goals and 11 points in the win for Loras. Flynn scored a game-high six goals while adding an assist while Veljacic tallied four goals. Ashley McGee earned the win in goal for the Duhawks with five saves. 

Elmhurst hosts Concordia University-Chicago on April 4.
