CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team slipped to 3-5 on the season after dropping games to the University of Southern Maine and Manchester College at the PFX Games in Florida.
Elmhurst dropped its opening game of the day to Southern Maine, falling 7-5. The Bluejays fell 13-2 to Manchester in the team's second game of the day. After starting the tournament with a 3-1 record, the Bluejays have now dropped four straight.
SOUTHERN MAINE 8, ELMHURST 5 - Southern Maine scored the first seven runs of the game before holding off a late rally from Elmhurst.
Trailing 7-0 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Bluejays scored their first run of the game on a Southern Maine error. Southern Maine tacked on a run in the top of the sixth to open up a six-run cushion at 7-1.
Elmhurst scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBIs from
Tara Cannella, Faith Thompson and
Stephanie Sturino. Southern Maine added one last run in the top of the sixth to push their lead back to four at 8-4.
Thompson knocked home the Bluejays' final run in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the tying run to the plate, but a ground out ended the Bluejays' chances.
Cannella, Thompson and
Erin Steik all totaled two hits apiece in the loss. Thompson drove in a pair of runs for the Bluejays.
Emily Despain took the loss for Elmhurst, surrendering 13 hits and seven runs (five earned) over five innings of work. She did not issue a walk while striking out three.
MANCHESTER 13, ELMHURST 2 - Manchester banged out 12 hits and scored 11 runs in the second inning while routing the Bluejays 13-2 in five innings.
A three-run homer from Lauren Ladw and a grand slam from Alexis Mokos sparked the Spartans' 11-run second inning.
Elmhurst managed just four hits over five innings.
Ellie Braun recorded the Bluejays' only RBI in the contest.
Bailee Krantz made the start and took the loss, surrendering six hits and eight runs in 1.1 innings of work.
Elmhurst faces Oberlin and Hamilton on March 21.
