Softball Team Wins Two in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Elmhurst softball team upped its record to 3-1 on the season after defeating Sewanee and Carleton at the PFX Games in Florida.
 
Elmhurst opened the day with a 16-5 blowout win over Sewanee and then tipped Carleton 4-3 in the night cap.
 
ELMHURST 16, SEWANEE 5 – Elmhurst totaled 17 hits and 16 runs in an 11-run victory over Sewanee.
 
RBI singles from Rebekah Ondracek and Mia Riese in the first inning staked Elmhurst to an early 2-0 lead. Sewanee answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a one-run lead.
 
Elmhurst blew the game open in the second, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring nine runs. A three-run, bases-clearing triple from Stephanie Sturinio highlighted the eight-hit inning for the Bluejays.
 
The Bluejays batted around again in the third inning, sending 11 hitters to the dish while scoring five runs.

Nine different Bluejays recorded hits in the victory. Sturino powered Elmhurst's attack, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Jenna Geraci added three hits and drove in three while Ondracek totaled two hits and knocked in three. Val Perrelli, Veronica Zahn and Erin Steik all totaled two hits apiece in the victory.

Stefania Passarelli picked up the victory from the mound, tossing all five innings. Passarelli scattered eight hits and four earned runs. She walked three and struck out three while picking up the victory.
 
ELMHURST 4, CARLETON 3 – Rebekah Ondracek's walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh propelled the Bluejays to a one-run win over Carleton.

Carleton (0-1) grabbed a 1-0 lead in top of the second, but the Bluejays answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, the Bluejays loaded the bases with two walks and a single. After a pop-up for the second out, Alyssa Ressinger delivered the big blow, roping a three-run triple into right field.
 
Carleton responded with a two-run, two-out triple from Katie Eppard in the seventh sixth to even the game at 3-3.
 
Faith Thompson led off the seventh with a pinch hit double. Perrelli walked and Zahn followed with a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Ondracek followed with the game-winning, walkoff single to left.
 
Zahn led Elmhurst at the plate, collecting three of the Bluejays' nine hits. Ondracek added two hits while Ressinger drove in three runs for the Bluejays.
 
Jenna Geraci made the start for the Bluejays and took a no-decision. Geraci worked four innings, scattering five hits and one run. She walked one and fanned one. Emily Despain picked up the victory in relief, working the final three innings and allowing three hits and two runs. She walked two while striking out five.
 
Elmhurst takes on Wesleyan University and Hendrix College tomorrow (March 18).
