CLERMONT, Fla. – The Elmhurst softball team split its opening games of the 2018 season, defeating Fitchburg State 6-1 before falling to Rutgers-Newark 6-4.
ELMHURST 6, FITCHBURG STATE 1 – Elmhurst won its season-opener, defeating Fitchburg State 6-1 behind a complete game from
Emily Despain.
Elmhurst jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of Fitchburg State errors. A groundout from Alyssa Ressinger started the scoring for the Bluejays.
Stephanie Sturino added an RBI single to stake Elmhurst to a quick 2-0 lead.
Rebekah Ondracek doubled home a run in the third inning to make the score 3-0. Fitchburg State got a run back in the bottom of the third, but Elmhurst tacked on three runs to pull away. Ondracek singled home a run in the fourth and Ressinger knocked in two runs with a double in the sixth.
Elmhurst finished with 10 hits on the day. Ondracek led the Bluejays offense, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Tara Cannella added a pair of hits while Ressinger knocked in three.
Val Perrelli and Veronica Zahn both scored two runs apiece.
Despain picked up the win for the Bluejays, tossing a complete game and limiting Fitchburg State to just four hits and one earned run. She scattered two walks while striking out nine.
RUTGERS-NEWARK 6, ELMHURST 4 – Elmhurst slipped to 1-1 on the season after falling 6-4 to Rutgers-Newark.
Rutgers Newark scored a run in the second to take an early 1-0 lead. An error on Rutgers allowed the Bluejays to score the game-tying run in the bottom of the third.
Rutgers Newark plated an unearned run in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. They added four runs in the top of the seventh to open up a 6-1 lead.
Elmhurst loaded the bases to start the seventh. After a strikeout, Ressinger doubled home two runs to bring the tying run to the plate. A groundout from Cannella drove in another run, but a groundout ended the Bluejays' chances.
Elmhurst collected 10 hits in the loss. Zahn, Mia Riese and Jenna Geraci collected two hits apiece in the contest. Zahn scored two runs while also stealing a bag.
Bailee Krantz suffered the loss for Elmhurst. She allowed 10 hits and three earned runs. She walked two and struck out six.
Elmhurst takes on Sewanee and Carleton on Saturday, March 17.
