Bluejays Rally to Salvage Split With Westminster

FULTON, Mo. - The Elmhurst baseball team moved to 4-2 on the season after splitting a doubleheader with Westminster College (Mo.).

Westminster (4-1) took the opening game 6-1, but Elmhurst scored six runs in the seventh inning to rally to a 12-11 game-two victory.

WESTMINSTER 6, ELMHURST 1 (Game One) - Westminster scored five unearned runs in the second inning to score a 6-1 victory over Elmhurst in game one.

Westminster took advantage of an Elmhurst error to extend the second inning, scoring all five runs with two-out hits. Elmhurst picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth on a James Wick sacrifice fly, but Westminster answered back with a run in the bottom of the fifth to earn the 6-1 victory.

Jacob McMillan collected two of Elmhurst's six hits in the loss.

Westminster's Ian Cassidy limited Elmhurst to just one run and six hits while pitching a complete game. Cassidy walked one and struck out six. Nick Drago took the loss for Elmhurst. He worked 4.1 innings and allowed seven hits and six runs (just one earned). He did not issue a walk and struck out three.

ELMHURST 12, WESTMINSTER 11 (Game Two) - Home runs from Jordan Scrimpsher and Trey Compton helped Elmhurst rally from a seven-run deficit to defeat Westminster 12-11 in game two.

Westminster built a 4-3 lead after three innings before scoring three more in both the fourth and fifth innings, building a 10-3 lead in the process. Elmhurst scored three times in the top of the sixth after a pair of walks and a hit batter forced in three runs. Westminster got a run back in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 11-6.

Elmhurst quickly loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and Jordan Scrimpsher cleared them with one swing, bashing a grand slam to bring Elmhurst to within a run. After a double from Christian Ott, Compton delivered the game-winning blow, cracking a two-run homer with two outs.

Scrimpsher led Elmhurst at the plate with two hits and four RBIs. Compton finished with three hits, score two runs and knocked in three. Reagan McReynolds, McMillan, and Tyler Kledzik all finished with two hits apiece in the win.

Alec Berry picked up the win in relief. Berry worked the final five innings in relief for the Bluejays to pick up the victory. He allowed just five hits and one earned run while striking out four and walking just one.

Elmhurst and Westminster will play the final game of a three-game series tomorrow.
