MEQUON, Wis. – The Elmhurst men's lacrosse time scored six unanswered goals in a six-minute span to turn a three-goal fourth quarter deficit into a 12-9 road win over Concordia University (Wis.).
Elmhurst upped its record to 2-1 on the season while Concordia fell to 1-2 overall.
Concordia raced out to a 4-0 lead early in the second quarter before Elmhurst answered back with a pair of goals from Cullen Nordeman and a
Ty Funderburk score to cut the deficit down to 4-3 at the half.
Mac Harden scored just 34 seconds into the third quarter to pull Elmhurst even at 4-4, but Concordia answered back with goals from Jack Donnellan and Aidan Connolly to open up a 6-4 lead midway through the third. Funderburk netted his second goal of the contest with two minutes left in the third to pull Elmhurst back to within one at 6-5 after three quarters.
Donovan Harper scored early in the fourth to reestablish a two-goal lead for the Falcons.
Dan O'Connell scored on an extra-man advantage with 9:40 remaining to bring Elmhurst back to within one, but Concordia responded with back-to-back goals from Donnellan, taking a 9-6 lead with nine minutes left to play.
Elmhurst dominated the remainder of the game as Funderburk struck for consecutive goals just 25 seconds apart to bring Elmhurst back to within a one goal deficit. Trent Nyberg scored two minutes later while the Bluejays were playing a man down to knot the score at 9-9.
Elmhurst continued its offensive surge as Nordeman found the back of the net 19 seconds later to put Elmhurst in front for the first time in the contest with six minutes remaining. Marcus Yandall cashed in on a Concordia penalty less than a minute later, giving Elmhurst an 11-9 lead in the process. Harden put the game away with his second goal of the contest with just two minutes remaining. Elmhurst scored five goals in a 3:16 span before Harden tacked on the final goal of the game.
Funderburk and Nordeman powered the Elmhurst offense, finishing with seven and six points, respectively. Funderburk fired home four goals while adding three assists. Nordeman picked up a hat trick with three goals while also adding three assists. Harden added two goals while O'Connell, Nyberg and Yandall all finished with one goal apiece. Yandall and
Dan Curley also added assists for Elmhurst in the win.
Carter Meyer won 16-of-24 faceoffs and totaled a team-leading eight ground balls in the victory.
Noah Bachofen and Jacob Delgado combined for the win in net. Bachofen played the first 53:40 and recorded nine saves while allowing nine goals. Delgado stopped the only shot he faced in the game's final 6:20.
Elmhurst outshot Concordia 39-35, including a whopping 18-7 in the fourth quarter. The Bluejays also picked up 34 ground balls to Concordia's 23. Elmhurst was successful on 19-of-20 clearing attempts.
Donnellan led Concordia with five points on four goals and an assist. Connolly tacked on two goals for the Falcons. Garret Wohlford took the loss in goal, allowing 12 goals while recording 15 saves.
Elmhurst plays at Benedictine University on Saturday, April 3.
