KENOSHA, Wis. - A poor first quarter doomed the Elmhurst women's basketball team in a 92-62 road loss at Carthage College.
Elmhurst slipped to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCIWÂ following the loss while Carthage improved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in league play.Â
Elmhurst scored the game's opening bucket, but the Bluejays did not hit a field goal for the remainder of the first quarter as Carthage scored the next 25 points to blow the game open with a 25-2 lead. Carthage led 32-8 after the first quarter Elmhurst shot just 1-of-10 from the floor in the quarter and turned the ball over seven times leading to 12 Carthage points. The Lady Reds led by as many as 29 in the first half and carried a 47-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.Â
The Lady Reds led by as many as 36 points in the second half before cruising to the 30-point victory.
Elmhurst shot 36.0 percent (18-of-50) from the floor, including 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc in the loss. Carthage made the most of Elmhurst's mistakes, turning 14 Bluejays' turnovers into 29 points.
Courtney O'Donnell led Elmhurst int he loss with 13 points and five rebounds.
Kelly Weyhrich added 10 points and three assists while
Marissa Urso came off the bench to score eight.Â
Carthage shot 53.2 percent (33-of-62) from the floor, including 48.0 percent (12-of-25) from three-point distance. Four Lady Reds starters combined for 68 points. Madie Kaelber led the Lady Reds with 22 points while Autumn Kalis scored 20 points. Sammie Woodward finished with 13 points while Bailey Gilbert totaled 11 points and eight rebounds.
Elmhurst hosts North Park University next Saturday, December 15.Â
