Women's Hoops Team Falls to Wittenberg

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2018-19 season, falling 65-45 to Wittenberg University on the second day of the North Park University Tournament.
 
Wittenberg (2-0) built a five-point lead (16-13) after the opening quarter. The Tigers pushed their lead up to nine points (27-18) with two minutes remaining in the second quarter, but the Bluejays closed the half on a 5-0 run to pull to within four points (27-23) at the break.
 
Elmhurst (2-1) scored the opening bucket of the third quarter to pull to within two, but Wittenberg responded with an 11-1 run to drive its lead up to 12 points with 6:30 remaining in the third. Elmhurst brought the Tigers' lead down to six with 2:34 left in the quarter, but Wittenberg used an 8-2 run to carry a 48-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Elmhurst struggled to the start the fourth, as the Bluejays were scoreless for the first four minutes while Wittenberg extended its lead up to 19 points. The Bluejays came no closer than 16 points for the duration of the game as the Tigers cruised to the 20-point win.
 
Elmhurst struggled with its shooting, hitting just 17-of-61 shots from the floor to finish the contest at 27.9 percent. The Bluejays were ice cold from three-point distance, missing all 16 of their attempts.
 
Courtney O'Donnell paced Elmhurst in the loss with 12 points while Lisa Logan added a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds. Kellee Clay, Kween Jean and Becca Gerke added six points apiece for Elmhurst.
 
Wittenberg shot 53.1 percent (26-of-49) from the floor in the victory. The Tigers were red-hot in the second half, hitting 60.7 percent (17-of-28) of its shots from the field. Delaney Williams paced the Tigers with 21 points, shooting 10-of-14 from the field. Nora Hopkins added 10 points for the Tigers.
 
Elmhurst travels to Chapman University on Friday, November 23.
