Men's Hoops Team Comes Up Short at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Elmhurst men's basketball team dipped to 3-3 in the CCIW after coming up short in a 63-57 road loss at Carthage College.
 
Elmhurst (10-5) jumped out to a five-point lead midway through the opening half, but the Bluejays scored just four points over the final nine minutes of the half as Carthage built a 36-30 lead at the break.

Carthage (9-6, 4-2 CCIW) led by as many as eight points early in the second half before the Bluejays ripped off a 12-2 run over a four-minute span to take a 52-50 lead with eight minutes to play. The score was even at 54-54 with just over five minutes remaining, but Carthage used a 5-0 run over the next 3:30 to open a 59-54 lead with 1:36 remaining. A Ryan Patton three-pointer cut the Red Men's lead down to just two with 1:23 left, but a tip-in and two free throws from Sean Johnson helped Carthage come away with the six-point victory.
 
Elmhurst struggled with its shooting throughout the game, hitting only 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the floor. Elmhurst won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Carthage 42-34.
 
Derek Dotlich came off the bench to score a team-leading 14 points for the Bluejays. Jeremy Ireland added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds while Patton also scored 10 for Elmhurst. Jake Rhode finished with five points and seven assists while Lavon Thomas scored nine for Elmhurst.
 
Carthage also shot below 40 percent in the contest, finishing the game hitting just 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the floor. Kienan Baltimore led the way with 15 points while Jordan Thomas scored 13 for the Red Men.
 
Elmhurst hosts Augustana College on Wednesday, Janauary 17.
