ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst volleyball team slid to 3-2 on the season after suffering a three-set loss to 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Bluejays' home-opener at R.A. Faganel Hall.
Elmhurst, ranked 22nd in the latest AVCA Division III poll, fell 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.
Whitewater breezed to a quick two set lead, as the Warhawks never trailed in the opening set en route to a 25-19 win. The Warhawks trailed by two points early in the second set but rattled off a 13-4 run to build a 15-8 lead before coasting to the 25-14 win.
Elmhurst started strong in the third scoring the first four points before building a nine-point lead at 12-3 and again at 14-5. Things went quickly downhill for the Bluejays as Whitewater ripped off the next 14 points behind the serve of Amanda Spera. The 14-0 run put the Warhawks in front 19-14 before the team pulled away for the 25-18 win.
Elmhurst hit just .082 for the match with 28 kills and 20 errors in 97 swings.
Alli Rogers led the Bluejays' offense, finishing with 12 kills while hitting .267.
Mel Lundin added seven kills while
Bailey Brouwer finished with four.
Katie Davis led the team in assists with 14 while
Taylor Nirchi totaled nine.
Amy Schryver finished with a team-leading 12 digs in the contest.
Sydney Rackey powered Whitewater with 14 kills and six digs. Courtney Wagner added nine kills while Elizabeth Niestrom tallied 33 assists and nine digs. Speara finished with seven kills and a match-high six aces.
Elmhurst travels to Illinois Wesleyan University on Saturday, September 9 to face DePauw University and Ohio Northern University.
