Bluejays Split Pair with Trinity Christian

ELMHURST, Ill. – Mikayla Melone's RBI double in game two helped the Elmhurst softball team salvage a doubleheader split with Trinity Christian College.
 
Elmhurst dropped the opener 9-2 but rebounded to take the night cap 3-2. The Bluejays moved to 10-12 on the season while Trinity Christian moved to 9-13.
 
TRINITY CHRISTIAN 9, ELMHURST 2 (Game One) – Elmhurst jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Trinity Christian scored nine unanswered runs to take the opening game of the doubleheader 9-2.
 
Elmhurst jumped on the board quickly, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Singles from Bri Getzloff and Val Perrelli put runners at second and third with just one out in the inning. Rebekah Ondracek laid down a squeeze bunt to score Getzloff and give Elmhurst an early 1-0 lead. Mikayla Melone added a two-out double to score Perrelli and put the Bluejays in front by two.
 
Trinity got a run back in the third to cut the Bluejays' lead in half at 2-1. Elmhurst carried the one-run lead into the fifth inning before Trinity Christian pulled even with a run.
 
Things fell apart for Elmhurst in the late innings. The Trolls strung together five hits to score three runs in the sixth, taking a 6-2 lead in the process. Trinity added four hits and four runs in the seventh to pull away for the seven-run victory.
 
Getzloff led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 3-for-3 with a run scored. Stephanie Sturino added two hits in the loss for Elmhurst. Trinity Christian finished with 16 hits, including three apiece from Chloe McRobbie and Emily Phillips. McRobbie drove in three while Phillips and Katie Shoulta drove in two runs apiece.

Stefanie Sanidas took the loss from the circle for Elmhurst, dipping to 5-5 in the process. She worked six innings, allowing 12 hits and five runs. Sanidas walked two and fanned one.
 
ELMHURST 3, TRINITY CHRISTIAN 2 (Game Two) – Mikayla Melone doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth to lift the Bluejays to a 3-2 victory in game two.
 
Elmhurst once again grabbed an early lead, scoring two runs in the first. An RBI double from Mikayla Melone started the scoring with an RBI double. A groundout from Ondracek drove in Sanidas to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead after one inning.
 
Trinity answered back with two runs in the top of the third. A leadoff triple from Emily Phillips set up the inning for the Trolls. RBI singles from Schoulta and Jamie Budreau evened the score at 2-2.
 
The Bluejays went back in front in the bottom of the fifth. Bri Getzloff drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Melone followed with a double of the right field wall to drive in Getzloff and put the Bluejays in front 3-2.
 
Melone swung a hot bat for the Bluejays, finishing 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the victory.

Bailee Krantz made the start for Elmhurst but did not factor in the decision. She worked four innings, allowing five hits and two runs. She walked one and fanned two. Emily Despain recorded the win in relief, pitching three spotless innings in relief. Despain did not allow a baserunner and struck out two.
 
Elmhurst hosts North Central College next Thursday, April 13, at Salt Creek Park.
