Men's Lacrosse Team Topples Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team scored her third straight CCIW victory with a convincing 9-2 road win at Augustana College. 

Elmhurst raced out to a 4-0 lead before the game was delayed for nearly three-and-a-half hours. The delay did not slow the Bluejays as Elmhurst outscored the Vikings 5-2 after the delay en route to the seven-goal victory.

Elmhurst improved to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the CCIW, securing the #3 seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament in the process. 

Elmhurst jumped on the board just 3:25 into the contest on a Mac Harden goal. Two minutes later, Matt Westhaver found the back of the net to give Elmhurst a two-goal. lead. The Bluejays tacked on two quick goals to start the second quarter before the rain delay. Ty Funderburk scored 1:41 into the quarter and Dan O'Connell scored less than a minute later to give Elmhurst a four-goal cushion.

Westhaver netted his second goal of the game with 31 seconds remaining in the second quarter. O'Connell scored midway through the third to give Elmhurst a six-goal lead. Augustana ended Elmhurst's scoring streak with 4:47 left in the third on a Sam Daly Score. The Vikings closed to within four goals with 10:27 remaining in the fourth, but Jake Cambron, Harden and Westhaver tacked on three consecutive goals as the Bluejays pulled away for the seven-goal win. 

Elmhurst outshot Augusta 32-31 in the contest and held a 32-26 edge in ground balls. 

Westhaver paced Elmhurst's attack with four points, finishing with three goals and an assist. Harden and O'Connell both added three points with two goals and an assist apiece. 

Nick Bonastia picked up the win in goal for Elmhurst while limiting the Vikings to only two goals. Bonastia recorded 13 saves and kept Augustana off the scoreboard for over 40 minutes while the Bluejays' built their six-goal lead. 

Elmhurst will play at Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday, May 3, in the opening round of the CCIW Tournament.
