Seventh Inning Homers Lift Bluejays to Split

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team used a pair of home runs in the bottom of the seventh of game two to score a 5-4 win over St. Mary's College (Ind.) and salvage a doubleheader split.

St. Mary's (21-13) won the opening contest 6-3 but home runs from Sydney Routsi and Lauren Rismondo helped the Bluejays rally for a 5-4 walk-off win in game two. Elmhurst moved to 14-16 on the season with the split.

ST. MARY'S 6, ELMHURST 3 (Game One) – A grand slam from Jamie Young helped lead St. Mary's past Elmhurst 6-3 in the opening game of the doubleheader.

The Belle's built a 5-0 lead after two innings after scoring an unearned run in the first and four more on the Young grand slam in the top of the second. The Belles added a run in the sixth on Alyssa Alberts' RBI groundout to take a six-run lead.

Elmhurst slowly clawed its way back into the contest. The Bluejays loaded the bases in the fifth and came up empty, but scored two runs in the sixth. With two outs and the bases empty, the Bluejays used five straight singles to drive in a pair of runs. Sydney Routsi and Riley Schweig both drove in runs with singles in the frame.

Elmhurst added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Val Perrelli single to pull to within three. The Bluejays brought the tying run to the plate in the inning, but St. Mary's Morgan Raymer struck out the final batter to preserve the win for St. Mary's.

Stephanie Sturino and Perrelli recorded two hits apiece in the loss for Elmhurst.  Young led St. Mary's at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four driven in.

Bailee Krantz took the loss for Elmhurst, making the start and pitching three innings. Krantz allowed five runs (four earned) and five hits. She fanned two while not issuing a walk.

Zoe Bruni earned the win for St. Mary's, working six innings and scattering seven hits, two runs and three walks while fanning one. Raymer retired the only batter she faced to record the save.

ELMHURST 5, ST. MARY'S 4 (Game Two) – Home runs from Sydney Routsi and Lauren Rismondo in the bottom of the seventh propelled the Bluejays to a walk-off 5-4 win in game two.

St. Mary's grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first, but the Bluejays battled back to pull even in the third. Emily Despain doubled with one out and moved to third on a groundout. Despain scored on a Bri Getzloff RBI single to knot the score at 1-1.

The Belles went back in front in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from Kelsey Richards, but the Bluejays answered back in the bottom of the inning. Val Perrelli roped an RBI double of the wall in center field to drive in Rebekah Ondracek and bring the Bluejays level at 2-2. Tara Cancella's RBI single scored Stephanie Sturino to give Elmhurst its first lead of the day at 3-2.

Down to their final out with the bases empty in the seventh, St. Mary's rallied for two runs to take the lead. A run-scoring double from Richards tied the game at 3-3 and Zoe Bruni's RBI single put the Belles in front 4-3.

The Belle's lead was short lived, however, as Sydney Routsi pinch-hit to lead off the bottom of the seventh and drilled the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for a game-tying home run. After a lineout, Lauren Rismondo belted a solo homer down to the left field line to lead Elmhurst to the 5-4 walk-off win.

Getzloff, Perrelli and Cannella collected two hits apiece for Elmhurst in the loss.

Stefanie Sanidas made the start and took a no-decision for Elmhurst, tossing 4.1 innings and allowing eight hits and two earned runs. She fanned one while not issuing a walk. Emily Despain finished up in relief, tossing the final 2.2 innings and allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on Tuesday, April 25.
