DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team outscored Dubuque 10-0 in the second half en route to a 13-3 road win over the Spartans.
Elmhurst improved to 6-8 overall with the win and evened its CCIW record at 2-2. Dubuque slid to 9-7 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Entering halftime tied at three, Elmhurst dominated the second half. The Bluejays outshot the Spartans 33-0 while outscoring them 10-0.
The Bluejays jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from
Mac Harden and
Ty Funderburk less than 2:30 into the game.
Dubuque rattled off three straight goals between the first and second quarters to take its only lead at 3-2. Josh Berry-Wingate, Matt Penalvert and Tyson Svoboda all tallied goals in the stretch for the Spartans.
Jake Heil pulled Elmhurst level at 3-3 with just 41 seconds remaining in the first half.
Elmhurst scored early and often in the second half.
Dan O'Connell and
Jake Cambron tallied goals less then three minutes into the third quarter to give Elmhurst a two-goal cushion. Funderburk and
Eric Langston scored less than a minute apart midway through the quarter to push Elmhurst's lead up to four. Funderburk, Cambron and
Matt Westhaver all added goals before the third quarter was over as Elmhurst outscored Dubuque 7-0 in the third.
Funderburk netted his fourth goal of the game with just under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Heil and Harden added fourth quarter goals to help the Bluejays cruise to the 10-goal victory.
Elmhurst finished the contest outshooting Dubuque 47-17, including 33-0 in the final 30 minutes. The Bluejays also owned a 31-13 edge in ground balls while winning 15-of-19 faceoffs. Elmhurst was also a perfect 14-of-14 in clear attempts.
Funderburk paced Elmhurst's attack with seven points, finishing with four goals and three assists. Harden registered five points on two goals and three assists while picking up four ground balls. Heil and Cambron added two goals apiece for the Bluejays. Langston tallied a goal and a team-best three caused turnovers.
Rami Ringling won 15-of-19 faceoffs and tallied a team-best seven ground bals.
Nick Bonastia recorded six saves in goal while picking up the victory for the Bluejays.
Penalvery, Svoboda and Berry-Wingate tallied Dubuque's goals. Kyle Mullins took the loss in goal for the Spartans, despite recording 19 saves.
