Baseball Team Opens Season With Pair of Wins

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The Elmhurst baseball team opened the 2017 season by scoring wins over Grinnell College and Lawrence University. 

Elmhurst won its opener 10-5 over Grinnell before toppling Lawrence 6-3 in the team's second game of the day. 

ELMHURST 10, GRINNELL 5 - Elmhurst used Ben Havel's arm and bat to cruise to a 10-5 season-opening victory over Grinnell. 

Havel finished a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, finishing a triple shy of the cycle, His three-run home run in the fourth helped spark a four-run inning for the Bluejays. He also scored two runs and drove in three. 

Havel also made the start from the mound and picked up the victory, tossing 6.2 innings and allowing just four hits and one earned run. He walked four and fanned five in the win. 

Elmhurst grabbed a quick lead in the third after a Grinnell error and a sacrifice fly from Austin MacMillan gave Elmhurst a two-run cushion. An RBI single from Brandon Kressner put the Bluejays up 3-0 before Havel cracked a three-run homer to make it 6-0. The Bluejays tacked on four insurance runs in the eighth, including a pair of RBIs from MacMillan. 

Kressner collected three of Elmhurst's 17 hits in the win and scored three runs. A.J. Compton and Jacob McMillian added two hits apiece for the Bluejays while Reagan McReynolds scored two runs for Elmhurst. 

ELMHURST 6, LAWRENCE 3 - Elmhurst scored four runs in the top of the first and never looked back, outlasting Lawrence 6-3 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Elmhurst turned a pair of Lawrence errors in the opening frame into three earned runs as the Bluejays plated four in the inning to take a quick four-run lead.

Lawrence (1-1) scored twice in the bottom of the first to cut the Bluejays' lead in half. A MacMillan RBI double in the fourth and a run-scoring single from McReynolds in the fifth gave Elmhurst a 6-2 lead. Lawrence loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate, by Karson Thomas pitched out of the jam as the Vikings managed just one run. 

Nick Drago picked the up from the mound, tossing seven strong innings and allowing just five hits and two runs. Drago walked two and struck out six in the win. Thomas picked up the save, recording the final six outs while allowing just one hit and striking out one. 

Elmhurst wraps up its two-day trip in Jacksonville with games against the University of Chicago and Loras College on Sunday, March 5.
