Women's Lacrosse Team's Comeback Falls Short

WAVERLY, IOWA - Grace Knoebel and Ellen Brown combined to score seven goals, including six in the second half, but the Elmhurst women's lacrosse team's rally came up short in a 10-7 loss at Watburg.

The contest was delayed by rain and lightening and both and the Bluejays were a player down for the entire contest due to injuries. 

Wartburg (2-3) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Ashlyn Jelinek's goal just over two minutes into the contest. Knoebel evened the score for the Bluejays less than two minutes later with her first goal of the contest. 

Wartburg stormed back, scoring five straight goals to close the half. Sophia Corpstein totaled three of the five goals for the Knights as Wartburg built a 6-1 lead at the half. Corpstein struck just 1:47 into the second half to give Wartburg a 7-1 lead before Elmhurst mounted a rally. 

Ellen Brown tallied back-to-back goals and then Knoebel struck for her second goal of the contest to pull Elmhurst to within three at 7-4 with 17:33 left to play. Wartburg's Ashlyn Moen ended the Bluejays' scoring streak with a goal with 14:58 remaining to put the Knights back in front by four, but Knoebel answered back just one minute later with her third goal of the contest. 

Corpstein netted her fifth goal of the game with 13:18 remaining to put the Knights in front 9-5. Elmhurst made one last push as Knoebel scored her fourth goal of the game with 7:34 remaining. Brown netted her third of the contest just 4:22 later to bring Elmhurst to within two (9-7) with 3:12 remaining. Wartburg's Allie Stahmer helped put the game away, scoring an insurance goal with less than a minute remaining to make the final score 10-7.

Wartburg outshot Elmhurst 21-13 in the contest and enjoyed a 15-10 edge in ground balls. 

Knoebel led the way for Elmhurst with four goals while Brown added three goals, three ground balls and five draw controls. Megan Keener took the loss in goal despite recording 11 saves.Annette Stidham recorded a team-best five ground balls.

Corpstein paced Wartburg with six points, finishing with five goals and one assist. Stahmer added two goals for the Knights while Laura Sinkovitz tallied seven saves in goal. 

Elmhurst hosts St. Mary's on Tuesday, March 28.
