Softball Team Sweeps Two In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Elmhurst softball team evened its record at 4-4 after scoring wins over both D'Youville College and Union College (N.Y.) at the NTC Spring Games in Florida.

Elmhurst opened the day with a convincing 10-2 win over D'Youville before shutting out Union 7-0.

ELMHURST 10, D'YOUVILLE 2 - Elmhurst scored four runs in the second, two in the third and ended the game via the eight-run mercy rule with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. 

A Stephanie Sturino two-run double in the second started the scoring for Elmhurst. Lauren Rismondo added an RBI single and a D'Youville error led to a fourth Elmhurst run. Emily Despain's two-run single in the third extended Elmhurst's lead to 6-0. D'Youville scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth, but the Bluejays answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Sydney Ruotsi singled home two runs, and Rebekah Ondracek added a two-run triple to end the contest. 

Val Perrelli and Despain collected two hits apiece to pace the Bluejays' at the plate. Ruotsi, Ondracek, Sturino and Despain all drove in two runs apiece for the Bluejays.

Bailee Krantz earned her first collegiate victory, tossing a complete game and allowing just two unearned runs. Krantz scattered three hits and two walks while fanning six. 

ELMHURST 7, UNION 0 - Stefanie Sanidas and Stefania Passarelli combined to throw a shutout as the Bluejays cruised to the 7-0 win over Union. 

Elmhurst grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the second on Ellie Braun's sacrifice fly. The Bluejays made it 2-0 in the third on a Mikayla Melone RBI single. Run-scoring singles from Rismondo and Bri Getzloff in the fourth extended Elmhurst's lead to 4-0. 

Erin Steik drove in two runs in the top of the fifth with a single while the Bluejays scored their final run of the game on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Getzloff led Elmhurst at the plate, collecting three hits in four at-bats. Steik added two RBIs while Perrelli scored two runs for the Bluejays. 

Sanidas picked up the win from the circle, making the start and throwing five innings. She allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out eight. Passarelli pitched two scoreless innings in relief while not allowing a hit. 

Elmhurst takes on Washington & Jefferson College and St. Olaf College tomorrow, March 23.
