Bluejays Can't Hold of Hope in Second Half

HOLLAND, Mich. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team fell to 3-3 on the season after coming up two goals short in a 10-8 road loss at Hope College.

Elmhurst started strong, carrying a 4-3 lead into the locker room at halftime, but Hope (3-1) rallied back in the second half, outscoring Elmhurst 7-4 to score the two-goal victory.

The Bluejays struck first on a Mac Harden goal early in the first quarter, but goals from Rocco Mularoni and Max Kuiper 15 seconds apart gave Hope a 2-1 lead after the first quarter. Elmhurst answered back with three straight scores to start the second quarter. Dan O'Connell, Jake Cambron and Harden all found the back of the net to give Elmhurst a 4-2 lead. Hope's Gunnar Elder scored with 2:34 left to cut Elmhurst's lead down to just one goal at the half.

Elmhurst started quickly in the third as O'Connell netted a man-advantage goal to give the Bluejays a two-goal cushion. Hope answered back with five straight goals to close the third quarter and take an 8-5 lead into the fourth.

Ty Funderbark scored early in the fourth to bring Elmhurst to within two, but Elder scored on a shorthanded attempt with 10:42 left to put the Flying Dutch in front 9-6. Goals from Jake Heil and Matt Westhave brought the Bluejays to within a goal with 2:16 remaining, but Elder put the game away for Hope with a goal with 31 seconds left. 

Elmhurst outshot Hope 40-31 while the Flying Dutch maintained a 27-24 edge in ground balls. Elmhurst scored on 3-of-9 extra-man opportunities. 

Harden paced Elmhurst's offense with four points, finishing with two goals and two assists. Carter Meyer scooped up five ground balls while CJ Galante forced a team-high four turnovers. Nick Bonastia took the loss in net despite recording 10 saves. 

Elder powered Hope to the win with five goals. Rocco Mularoni added three goals for the Flying Dutch. Nick Schanhals earned the win in goal with 10 saves. 

Elmhurst hosts Aurora University on Wednesday, March 15, at 7:00 p.m.
