ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2016-17 schedule by edging Calvin College at Courts Plus.
Elmhurst (7-7) trailed 4-2 halfway through singles play, but the Bluejays won the last three matches to score the 5-4 victory and hand Calvin (2-1) its first loss of the season.
Calvin scored the first point at No. 3 doubles when Anna Asfour and Jessica Bouma toppled the Bluejays' duo of
Dacey Maglaque and
Meg Simon 8-2. Elmhurst's No. 2 doubles squad of
Chiara Gaudio and
Kathryn Wheeler dealt Lark Foote and Liz Turner 8-4. The Bluejays led 2-1 after doubles play following
Ava Kolman and
Rachel Rettger's 9-7 victory over Claire Spoelhof and Ellie Benzel at No. 1 singles.
In singles play, Calvin won the bottom three matches to grab a 4-2 lead before Elmhurst the won top three matches to seal the victory. Calvin's Kari Kroeze downed Simon 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6 singles and Asfour followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Maglaque at No. 5 singles. Micaela Seazzu downed Wheeler 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles to give the Knights a 4-2 lead.Â
Gaudio upended Bouma 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Kolman capped a three-set comeback win over Spoelhof at No. 1 singles with a 6-7, 6-0, 6-3 victory. Rettger sealed the win for Elmhurst with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win over Benzel at No. 3 singles.
Elmhurst plays four matches on it's spring break trip to Orlando, Fla. in March.Â
