Women's Hoops Team Falls to Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's basketball team led for over 25 minutes but came up short in the fourth quarter in a 74-70 loss at the University of Chicago
 
Elmhurst (4-5) built an early seven-point first quarter lead only to see Chicago (6-2) rally to take a 14-13 lead with just 16 seconds. A jumper from Kelly Weyhrich gave the Bluejays a 15-14 lead entering the second. Elmhurst pushed its lead back up to seven points early in the second quarter after a three-pointer from Jasmin Bailey, but the Maroons once again answered back, pulling to within a point (29-28) at halftime.
 
The two teams traded buckets and leads seven times in the third quarter with the score being even at 48-all entering the final 10 minutes of action.  Chicago surged in front by seven points with 5:27 remaining, but the Bluejays answered back with a 12-2 run over the new two minutes to take a 64-61 lead after back-to-back three-pointers from Bailey and Lisa Logan. With the Bluejays leading by two with just under three minutes remaining, the Maroons used a 7-0 run to take a 70-65 lead with 1:50 left. Elmhurst curt the deficit down to two points with 18 seconds left, but four free throws from Mia Farrell helped Chicago preserve the four-point victory.
 
Elmhurst shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the floor, including 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays struggled from the foul line, hitting just 58.8 percent of their shots (10-of-17). Bailey continued her red hot shooting from the outside, finishing with a team-leading 21 points. She knocked down 5-of-10 attempts from three-point distance in the loss. Mikaela Eppard added a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 19 rebounds. Logan added 11 points while Weyhrich totaled 10 points and six assists. Hannah Henderson scored eight for the Bluejays.
 
Chicago hit 40.6 percent (26-of-64) of its shots, but just 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from downtown. The Maroons were solid from the free throw line, hitting 20-of-26 attempts (76.9 percent). Farrell, Olariche Obi and Taylor Lake combined to score 52 of Chicago's 74 points in the win. Obi led the way with a team-best double-double of 1 points and 15 rebounds. Farrell added 20 points, shooting a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Lake chipped in with 10 points for Chicago.
