CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's basketball team slipped to 1-1 on the season following a 66-57 road loss at Blackburn College.
Elmhurst struggled all game long, finishing the contest shooting just 34.9 percent from the field while committing 22 turnovers.
The Bluejays trailed by as many as eight points in the first half before cutting the deficit down to three points (31-28) at halftime.
Elmhurst started the second half with a
Jeremy Ireland bucket and a three-pointer from
Ryan Patton to take a two-point lead. The Bluejays and the Beavers traded leads four times over the next six minutes with the Bluejays holding a 41-40 lead with 12:40 remaining. Elmhurst went cold for the next seven minutes as Blackburn used a 16-3 run to open up a commanding 12-point cushion with just over five minutes remaining. Elmhurst cut the lead down to 10 with 4:48 remaining, but Blackburn put the game away with a 10-2 run over the next 2:30 to open up an 18-point lead. The Bluejays scored the final nine points to make the final score 66-57.
Colin Bomstad came off the bench to lead the Bluejays in scoring, finishing with 10 points. Ireland added nine points and 10 rebounds while
Peyton Sampson chipped in with eight points. The Bluejays' starting five struggled to produce, finishing with just a combined 20 points. The Bluejays' bench contributed 37 points in the loss.
Nigel Ferrell led Blackburn with 14 points while Karson Hayes added 11. Duncan King and Jamaya Wyatt added 10 points apiece for Blackburn in the victory. Blackburn shot 41.4 percent from the floor (24-of-58) and took advantage of the Bluejays turnovers to score 26 points.
Elmhurst looks to get back on track on Sunday, November 26, when the Bluejays host Alma College at R.A. Faganel Hall.
