Women's Hoops Team Drops Opener to Whitewater

ELMHURST, Ill. – A cold fourth quarter resulted in the Elmhurst women's basketball team suffering a 75-64 loss to 20th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Bluejays' season-opening contest.
 
Elmhurst (0-1) and Whitewater (1-0) slugged it out for three quarters before Whitewater took control in the fourth. The score was tied nine times and the lead changed hands seven times over the first 30 minutes of action.
 
The Bluejays led by one (21-20) after the opening quarter but trailed by a bucket (37-35) at the half. The Bluejays pulled even at the start of the third following a Kaela Jones basket, but Whitewater quickly responded with a 6-0 run to push their lead back to six with seven minutes left.

Elmhurst fought back, pulling to within a point five times over the next six minutes. A Camri Conley jumper just before the end of the quarter gave the Warhawks a 58-55 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
 
Whitewater took control in the fourth quarter, starting the quarter with a 15-3 run over the first 6:35 of the quarter. The Bluejays struggled with their shooting in the quarter, hitting just 3-of-11 shots from the floor.  Elmhurst came no closer than nine points as the Warhawks pulled away for the nine-point win.
 
Elmhurst shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field, and struggled from long distance, hitting just 3-of-20 attempts (15.0 percent) from three-point range. Whitewater finished the contest shooting 50.8 percent (30-of-59) from the floor while also winning the rebounding battle 40-31. Whitewater converted 19 Elmhurst turnovers into 30 points.
 
Four players reached double figures to lead Elmhurst in the loss. Mikaela Eppard and Lisa Logan finished with 12 points apiece. Eppard, who played just eight minutes in the first half while battling foul trouble, added a team-leading nine rebounds in the loss. Kelly Weyhrich added 11 points and four rebounds while Jasmin Bailey scored 10 for the Bluejays. Hannah Henderson added nine points and four assists for Elmhurst.
 
Brooke Terwyn powered Whitewater with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Andrea Meinert and Conley added 16 points apiece while Becky Raeder came off the bench to score 11 for the Warhawks.
 
Elmhurst travels to the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday, November 18.
