Bluejays Stumble at Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Elmhurst football slipped to 2-3 after suffering a 31-8 road loss to Carthage College.
 
Carthage (5-1, 3-1 CCIW) scored the game's final 24 points to score its fifth win of the season.
 
Carthage scored the game's opening points after Lafayette McGary ripped off an 82-yard scoring run midway through the first quarter to stake the Red Men to an early lead.
 
Elmhurst answered back early in the second quarter. The Bluejays took advantage of great field position after a Carthage punt, taking over at the Carthage 31-yard line. Elmhurst capped a five-play scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown pass from Jake Tahaney to Hasahn Austin with nine minutes remaining in the half.

Carthage responded on its next possession with McGary returning a kickoff 56 yards to give Carthage the ball at the Elmhurst 40-yard line. The Red Men went back in front six plays later as McGary scored on a three-yard touchdown run to give Carthage a 14-7 lead.
 
The Red Men tacked on a 42-yard field goal just before the half ended to carry a 17-8 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Bluejays struggled to move the ball on offense in the second half, totaling just 35 yards on their first five possessions leading to five straight points. Carthage tacked on two additional touchdowns, a six yard catch from James Cobbs and a one-yard run from Jamel Davis to make the final score 31-8.
 
Elmhurst totaled 178 yards of offense in the loss, rushing for just five yards in the contest. The Bluejays compiled 178 yards through the air. Carthage totaled 306 yards, rushing for 230 while passing for only 76.
 
Jake Tahaney led Elmhurst in the loss carrying 14 times for 13 yards and completing 7-of-13 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown. Matt Brachmann hauled in four passes for 54 yards while Austin caught three passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. Storm Miller led Elmhurst's defense with nine tackles, including one tackle for loss.
 
McGary led Carthage on the ground, carrying 18 times for 134 yards and two scores. Davis added 104 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Kyle Friberg completed 9-of-18 passes for 76 yards and a score.
 
Elmhurst hosts Illinois Wesleyan University in two weeks on October 28.
