Bluejay Women Rout Millikin For Third Straight Win

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's basketball team won its third straight contest with an impressive 87-57 win over Millikin University.
 
Elmhurst tied its season-high for three-pointers in a contest, knocking down 11 shots from beyond the arc while pulling away from the Big Blue.
 
Elmhurst (11-3, 3-2 CCIW) started quickly, racing out to an 8-2 lead, but Millikin (7-8, 1-5 CCIW) responded, pulling in front 16-13 on a Devin Curry three-pointer with 1:25 left in the quarter. Trailing 16-14 entering the second quarter, the Bluejays surged in front at 22-21 on a Mikaela Eppard layup with 6:20 left in the half. The bucket was the start of a 15-0 run for Elmhurst sparked by three three-pointers, including two from Jasmin Bailey. Elmhurst led 35-21 with 2:40 left in the half. The Bluejays led by as many as 16 points in the half and carried a 39-26 lead into the locker room at the half. The Bluejays knocked down seven three-pointers in the game's opening 20 minutes.
 
The Bluejays upped their lead to 17 points early in the third quarter before the Big Blue answered back with a 6-0 run, cutting the deficit down to 11 points. The Bluejays answered back with a 14-5 run to blow the game open and take a 20-point lead with less than a minute to play in the quarter. Elmhurst led by 19 (66-47) entering the final quarter.
 
Millikin cut the deficit down to 15 points three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Big Blue came no closer as Elmhurst pounded the ball inside and used a 14-0 run to extend their lead to 29 before cruising to the 30-point victory.
 
Elmhurst shot 54.4 percent from the floor, hitting 31-of-57 shots from the field. The Bluejays were red hot from downtown, connecting on 11-of-15 attempts from three-point distance, good for 73.3 percent. Elmhurst also made the most of Millikin's mistakes, scoring 24 points off of 19 turnovers. Mikaela Eppard powered the Bluejays inside scoring 10 of her game-high 17 points in the fourth quarter. She added 10 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season. Kalia Summerlin added 15 points while knocking down 5-of-7 shots from three-point range. Michaela Kumer came off the bench to total 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Kaela Jones added 12 points while Jasmin Bailey scored nine. Becca Gerke and Hannah Lipman totaled eight points apiece for the Bluejays.
 
Millikin shot just 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the floor, including 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from three-point distance. Emily Schultz paced the Big Blue with 13 points in the loss while Devin Curry added 12 points and five rebounds.
 
Elmhurst travels to North Park University on Saturday, January 14.
