WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Elmhurst volleyball team moved to 4-2 on the 2016 season after splitting a pair of matches at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater triangular.
Elmhurst, ranked 17th in the latest AVCA Division III Poll, upended Dominican in four sets to start the day before falling to the host and 20th-ranked UW-Whitewater in three sets.
ELMHURST 3, DOMINICAN 1 - The Bluejays opened the day with a four-set win over Dominican, winning by scores of 25-19, 16-25, 25-20, 25-20.
Leading by just a point at 19-18 in the opening set, Elmhurst scored the final six points of the set take an early lead. Dominican answered back in the second, turning a two-point cushion into an eight-point cushion with a 9-4 run. Elmhurst came no closer than six points for the rest of the set as Dominican scored the 25-16 win.
Elmhurst built an early lead in the third, racing out to a 15-9 cushion. The Stars trimmed the deficit down to two points at 20-18, but a 5-2 run by the Bluejays closed out the third set at 25-20. The Bluejays established a quick eight-point lead at 12-4 in the fourth before holding off a late charge from the Stars. Dominican cut the deficit to two at 21-18, but the Bluejays used a 4-2 to close out the set 25-20 and take the match in four sets.
Elmhurst hit .228 for the contest with 52 kills and 23 errors in 127 attacks.
Mel Lundin and
Hannah Davis powered Elmhurst's attack with 12 kills apiece. Lundin added three blocks in the victory.
Melissa Nava added eight kills while
Mary Lawrence totaled seven.
Hannah Nimrick finished the day with 36 assists, 15 digs and six kills.
Amy Schryver added a team-best 18 digs in the victory.
Rosalyn Wyse paced Dominican (0-4) in the loss with nine kills and 10 digs. Elin Ream added a team-best 18 assists to go with six digs.
WHITEWATER 3, ELMHURST 0 – Elmhurst suffered its second loss of the season after dropping a three-set contest to 20th-ranked Whitewater. Whitewater won the match with scores of 26-24, 25-19, 25-15.
Whitewater (3-2) raced out to a 16-7 lead in the opening set only to see Elmhurst storm back. The Bluejays ripped off a 13-1 run to take a 20-17 lead. Elmhurst had a set point at 24-23, but the Warhawks scored the next three points to take the set 26-24.
Elmhurst had an early 8-4 lead in the second set, but Whitewater pulled even at 17-all and then scored the next four points to take a 21-17 lead before taking the set at 25-19. The third set belonged to Whitewater as the Warhawks built a 12-2 cushion and never looked back, cruising to the 25-15 victory.
Melissa Nava led Elmhurst in the loss with seven kills.
Alli Rogers added six kills while
Mary Lawrence totaled five kills for the Bluejays.
Hannah Nimrick finished with 18 assists while
Amy Schryver led the squad with 12 digs.
Sydney Racky paced Whitewater with 12 kills in the win while Courtney Wagner added seven kills and Staci Hasler finished with 32 assists.
Elmhurst travels to Wheaton College on September 14.
