AURORA, Ill. - The Elmhurst women's soccer team improved to 5-0 to begin the season for the first time in program history following a 1-0 road victory at Aurora University.
Playing its first road game of the 2016 season, the Bluejays needed little time to get on the scoreboard. Less than 6:30 into the contest,
Courtney O'Keeffe sent a sliding cross towards the top of the box and found an open
Kim Stanczak. Stanczak chipped the ball over Spartans' keeper Taylor Jordan's head and into the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Elmhurst made the goal stand up for the final 83+ minutes of action, allowing Aurora (1-3-1) just four shots for the contest. The Spartans put just one shot in goal in the game. The Bluejays finished the contest outshooting Aurora 8-4.
Emily Gordon and
Sophia Tuliglowski combined for the shutout in goal for Elmhurst. Gordon played the opening half and recorded the victory while Tuliglowski played the final 45 minutes and stopped the only shot she faced. Joiner recorded five saves in net for Aurora.
With the win, Elmhurst eclipsed the previous school record for most wins to start a season. Elmhurst teams had opened with four victories for numerous years, most recently in 2004, but no squad had won its first five contests to open the season.
Elmhurst, ranked fourth in the opening NSCAA Central Region poll, travels to Benedictine University on Saturday, September 17.
