Rostine & Bluejays Topple #14 North Central 5-1

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst baseball team opened a three-game weekend series with #14 North Central College with a 5-1 win at Butterfield Park.

North Central (24-6, 11-5) scored the game's first run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly, but the was all the Cardinals muster against Elmhurst's Mike Rostine. Rostine shut the door for the rest of the contest, allowing just eight hits while tossing a complete game.
 
Trailing 1-0 entering the third, the Bluejays took advantage of a pair of North Central throwing errors to move in front.  Evan Berliner led off the inning with a single. Reagan McReynolds followed with a bunt single that North Central threw past the bag allowing Berliner to go to third. Realizing no one was covering home plate on the play, Berliner rounded third and came home to score on the play to even the score at 1-1. McReynolds promptly stole second and moved to third on a throwing error on the Cardinals. An RBI single from Ben Havel put the Bluejays in front 2-1.
 
Elmhurst tacked on another insurance run in the fifth. McReynolds led off the inning with an infield single and took second on the third error of the game against North Central. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, McReynolds came home to score on Havel's second RBI single of the game.
 
The Bluejays continued to capitalize on North Central mistakes, plating a pair of unearned runs in the sixth after a fielding error allowed Trey Compton to reach to begin the inning. Matt Wilson followed with a single to move Compton to third. Christian Ott's infield single allowed Compton to score to extend Elmhurst's lead to 4-1. An RBI single from McReynolds gave the Bluejays their final run of the contest.
McReynolds and Havel combined for seven of Elmhurst's 12 hits and three of the team's four RBIs in the victory. McReynolds finished a perfect 4-of-4 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Havel finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
 
Rostine cruised to a complete game victory from the mound, improving to 5-1 in the process. He scattered eight hits and walked just one in nine innings of work while fanning three. Jordan Van Dyck suffered his first loss of the season (4-1) after allowing 10 hits and five runs (three earned) in six innings of work.
 
The two teams have adjusted their weekend schedule, postponing Saturday's scheduled doubleheader in Naperville to Sunday, May 1. The games are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
