Bluejays Earn Split With Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team salvaged a doubleheader split with Augustana College by taking the night cap 7-4 after dropping the opening contest 4-0.

Elmhurst moved to 14-16 overall and 3-7 in the CCIW with the split while Augustana moved to 15-19 overall and 5-7 in league play.

AUGUSTANA 4, ELMHURST 0 (Game One) – Augustana scored a pair of runs in the third and tacked on two in the fourth to topple the Bluejays 4-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.

A solo homer by Carly Wilson put Augustana in front 1-0 in the bottom of the third. Alaina Hoffman added an RBI single for the Vikings to make the score 2-0. A two-run homer from Zayne Blumberg in the fourth accounted for the final two runs of the game for Augustana.

Elmhurst outhit the Vikings 8-7 in the loss but the Bluejays could not come up with a key hit when needed. Elmhurst left seven runners on base and finished the game 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Brianna Thompson and Stephanie Hintz recorded two hits apiece for the Bluejays in the loss.

Stefanie Sanidas took the loss for the Bluejays. Sanidas made the start and allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings of work. She fanned three while not issuing a walk. Ashley Anderson earned the win for the Vikings, pitching a shutout while scattering eight hits over seven innings and striking out seven.

ELMHURST 7, AUGUSTANA 4 (Game Two) – Elmhurst earned the doubleheader split by scoring five times in the second inning en route to a 7-4 victory in game two.

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the second, the Bluejays sent nine batters to the plate and score five times on six hits. An RBI single from Bri Getzloff started the scoring for the Bluejays and evened the score at 1-1. Stephanie Sturino followed with a run-scoring double to drive in Getzloff and put Elmhurst up 2-1 in the process. A fielders choice from Lauren Rismondo scored another run and Thompson capped the scoring with a two-run double.

Augustana scored twice in the top of the third on a two-run shot from Brittany Kellett, but the Bluejays answered back with two runs in the bottom of the third. Morganne Evans delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to put Elmhurst in front 7-3.

The Vikings scored a run in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but a ground out ended the game and gave the Bluejays the three-run victory.

Thompson and Hintz collected two hits apiece for the Bluejays in the win as nine different Bluejays recorded hits in the victory.

Sturino notched the victory from the circle for the Bluejays. She scattered 11 hits and four runs while tossing a complete game. Shelby Grandt took the loss for the Vikings, surrendering six hits and five runs in just two innings of work.
