Softball Team Sweeps Pair From Blackburn

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team evened its record at 16-16 on the season by scoring a pair of five-inning victories over Blackburn College.

Elmhurst took the opening contest 11-3 and finished the doubleheader sweep with a 9-1 victory in game two.
 
ELMHURST 11, BLACKBURN 3 (Game One) – Elmhurst scored six runs in the third and four in the bottom of the fifth to earn an 11-3 walk-off win by eight runs.

Blackburn jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Jaclyn Elmore led off the game a with a solo homer and a two-out, RBI double from Caz Hartman gave the Beavers a two-run cushion.  
 
Elmhurst scored a run in the bottom of the first, but Blackburn answered back with a run in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Elmhurst broke things open in the bottom of the third by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs. Stephanie Hintz tripled home a run and Brianna Thompson followed with a double to even the score at 3-3. An error allowed Thompson to score and put the Bluejays in front 4-3. Crystal Marinell and Morganne Evans added RBI hits in the inning and Erin Steik squeezed home a run to cap the Bluejays' scoring and give Elmhurst a 7-3 lead in the process.
 
Elmhurst put the game away in the fifth with four runs. Evans and Steik each singled home a run. Bri Getzloff followed with a run-scoring single to give Elmhurst a seven-run cushion. Stephanie Hintz's groundout to short allowed Steik to score the walk-off run and give Elmhurst the eight-run victory.
 
Eight different Bluejays recorded hits in the victory as the squad totaled 14 in the game. Hintz finished 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and two driven in. Evans finished a perfect 3-for-3 with two driven in and a run scored. Steik drove in two in the Elmhurst win.
 
Stephanie Sturino made the start and earned the win for the Bluejays, tossing four innings and scattering seven hits and three walks over four innings of work. She walked one and fanned two.
 
ELMHURST 9, BLACKBURN 1 (Game Two) – Elmhurst finished the doubleheader sweep of Blackburn by scoring seven runs in the second inning en route to a 9-1 victory.
 
The Bluejays wasted little time scoring, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Thompson's RBI double. Elmhurst blew the game open in the second, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Steik started the scoring with a three-run double to right center, narrowly missing a grand slam. Hintz added an RBI double and Thompson followed with a two-run double to put the Bluejays up 7-0. An error on Blackburn allowed Thompson to score two batters later to give Elmhurst an eight-run cushion.
 
The Bluejays made it 9-0 in the bottom of the third as Steik collected her fourth RBI of the game with a double to left field.
 
Thompson and Steik powered the Bluejays at the plate. Thompson finished 3-for-3 with three driven in while Steik was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Hintz added a pair of hits, scored two runs and drove in one.
 
Stefanie Sanidas was perfect through the first three innings before Blackburn banged out two hits and scored a run in the fourth. Sanidas sat down the Beavers in order in the fifth to pick up her 10th victory (10-5) of the season. She allowed just two hits and one run in five innings while fanning six.
 
Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Tuesday, April 26, at 3:00 p.m.
