ELMHURST, Ill. – In its final home match of the season, the Elmhurst women's tennis team fell just short in a 5-4 loss to Lake Forest.
Seniors
Brittany Kuehn and
Lauren Kuehn were honored prior to the match and also come through with a pair of victories for the Bluejays (6-11), but the Foresters (14-6) took four of the six singles matches to win 5-4.
Elmhurst started off strong with a pair of doubles victories. The Kuehn sisters earned a quick 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles and the Bluejay No. 2 pairing of
Chiara Gaudio and
Hannah Vaselaney put the Bluejays ahead 2-0 with an 8-5 win.
Ava Kolman and
Rachel Rettger battled back from an early deficit, but it was not enough as Lake Forest's Christi Valicenti and Grace Dowling earned a key point 8-4.
In singles play, Elmhurst took a 3-1 lead when
Brittany Kuehn dispatched Whitney Navarro 6-1, 6-1. Lake Forest rattled off wins at the top four spots to decide the match at 5-3. Allison Watts beat Rettger 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Lucia Stumbras grinded out a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4. Trailing 6-0, 4-1, Gaudio battled back to get on serve, but Dowling came out on top 6-0, 6-3. The Foresters clinched the match at the top spot as Valicenti scored the fifth point with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Kolman.
Tori Liewergen scored the final point of the day for Elmhurst in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 5).
Elmhurst wraps up its season with a pair of matches in Madison, Wisconsin on April 30. The Bluejays will battle Alverno College at 12:00 p.m. and Edgewood College at 3:00 p.m.
