Miscues Doom Elmhurst Against Augustana

MOLINE, Ill. – Six errors cost the Elmhurst baseball team in a 10-7 loss against Augustana.

The Bluejays (14-11, 3-6 CCIW) scored five runs in the top of the eighth to take their first lead of the ballgame at 7-6. However, it all unraveled for Elmhurst in the bottom half of the inning as the Vikings (17-9, 6-3 CCIW) scored four runs on no hits and four Bluejay errors. Elmhurst allowed 10 runs in the game, but just four of them were earned.

Augustana plated five in the third to get the scoring started. Elmhurst committed two errors in the inning. Trace Gingrich had the big hit of the inning with a two-RBI single.

Elmhurst cut into the lead when Matt Wilson doubled home A.J. Compton in the fourth, but the Vikings quickly regained a four-run cushion by plating one in the fifth. Wilson helped Elmhurst put another run on the board in the seventh when he singled, stole second, and then came around to score on an error by the first baseman.

With the score now 6-2 in the eighth, Elmhurst rallied to take its first lead of the game. Two walks and a Matt Conroy pinch-hit single loaded the bases with nobody out. Austin MacMillan singled home a run and Wilson earned his second RBI of the day after he was hit by a pitch. With one away, Augustana walked in a run to make it a one-run ballgame, which brought Reagan McReynolds to the plate with the bases still loaded. McReynolds put a charge into the Bluejay bench by ripping a two-RBI double to right field that put Elmhurst ahead 7-6.

Three of Elmhurst's four eighth-inning errors came with two outs and helped the Vikings rally for four runs and a 10-7 victory.

McReynolds led the Bluejay offense with a pair of doubles, including the big one in the eighth. Wilson also plated two and scored twice on a pair of hits.

Kiko Mari pitched 4.2 innings, allowing six runs in a no decision. Nick Drago picked up the tough-luck loss, allowing three unearned runs in three innings. Ben Modesitt allowed one unearned run before recording the final out of the eighth. Bluejay pitching held the Vikings to just six hits in the loss.

Augustana's Kyle McGinley struck out 12 over six innings of one-run ball, but received a no decision. The Vikings bullpen combined to allow six runs in three innings.

Elmhurst has a three-game set with Wheaton this weekend. Friday's matchup will be played in Wheaton at 3:00 p.m., followed by a doubleheader in Elmhurst on Saturday, which starts at 12:00 p.m.
