ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Elmhurst softball team totaled 16 runs and 22 hits while sweeping a pair of games from Dominican University.
Elmhurst opened the doubleheader with a 10-1 victory in six innings and then completed the sweep with a 6-2 win in the nightcap. The Bluejays improved to 8-6 on the season with the wins.
ELMHURST 10, DOMINICAN 1 - Elmhurst scored early and often en route to a 10-1 victory that ended in six innings due to the eight-run rule.Â
Mikyla Melone started the Elmhurst scoring with a two-run double in the top of the first.
Crystal Marinelli followed with an RBI single to drive in Melone and put the Bluejays in front 3-0. RBI doubles from
Morganne Evans and
Lauren Rismondo in the second inning padded the Bluejays lead to five.Â
Dominican got a run back in the bottom of the third, but a sacrifice fly from
Bekah Ondracek in the fourth and a run-scoring double from
Bri Getzloff in the fifth gave Elmhurst a 7-1 lead.Â
An RBI single from Melone and a two-run single from
Stephanie Hintz in the sixth helped the Bluejays pull away for the nine-run victory.
Evans, Melone, Marinelli and Hintz finished with two hits apiece while the Bluejays totaled 12 hits as a team. Melone drove in a team-best three runs while Hintz knocked in a pair.
Brianna Thompson, Evans and Melone scored two runs apiece in the win.Â
Stefanie Sanidas improved to 5-2 on the season with the victory from the circle. Sanidas went the distance, allowing just four hits and one earned run over six innings of work. She did not issue a walk and struck out six in the win.Â
ELMHURST 6, DOMINICAN 3 (Game Two) - Elmhurst scored a run in the first beore tacking on five runs late to finish the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 win.
Elmhurst started the scoring in the first with one out. With the bases empty, Rismondo doubled to left field and scored one batter later as Thompson singled to right to drive her in.Â
The Bluejays carried the one-run lead into the fifth inning before breaking the game open with three runs. Evans tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Rismondo's RBI double. Ondracek drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Melone doubled home a run to cap the scoring in the frame.Â
Elmhurst tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI double from Evans and a run-scoring single from Thompson.Â
Dominican ended the shutout with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh to make the final score 6-2.
Thompson was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs driven in. Rismondo and Evans each finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.Â
Stephanie Sturnio picked up the win for the Bluejays from the circle, improving to 2-3 in the process. Sturino tossed a complete game while allowing just three hits and two unearned runs.Â
Elmhurst hosts Beloit College at Salt Creek Park on Wednesday, March 30.Â
