Elmhurst Runs Win Streak to Five

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Elmhurst baseball team used early scoring and solid pitching to score its fifth consecutive win, 7-3 over Fontbonne. The Bluejays' 10-3 season-opening record matches the best start to a season under Joel Southern (2011).

Justin Luzzi

The Bluejays (10-3) totaled six runs on seven hits, which was all the pitching duo of Justin Luzzi and Nick Drago would need. The two pitchers combined to allow just one earned run (three total), while striking out seven and walking just one.

Elmhurst jumped all over Fontbonne starter Tanner Carter from the get-go. In the first inning, three consecutive singles set the stage for an A.J. Compton two-RBI double. His brother Trey Compton followed that up by scoring Greg Struck from third on a ground out.

After a scoreless inning on the mound from Luzzi, Elmhurst piled on in the second. Travis Pickard walked and Reagan McReynolds slapped a double to put two in scoring position. Ben Havel then knocked in both with a single. Struck, the next batter, ripped a double that scored Havel all the way from first and put the Bluejays ahead 6-0.

Fontbonne chipped into the lead with two runs off of Luzzi in the third. Devon Tolan and Patrick Shuff both recorded RBI singles. The Griffins' third run came in the sixth when Alex Boyer reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Nick Rothweiler. 6-3 was as close as Fontbonne would get as Elmhurst tacked on an unearned run in the seventh.

Nick Drago

Luzzi earned the win for Elmhurst, tossing five innings and allowing three runs (one earned), eight hits, and one walk, while striking out five. Drago was a rock out of the Bluejay bullpen recording four shutout innings.

Havel led the Bluejay offense with three hits and two RBIs, while A.J. Compton also knocked in two on a pair of hits. McReynolds and Struck both recorded two hits and a run scored, while Struck added an RBI.

Tolan knocked around three hits to lead the Griffins. Carter ended his outing with seven innings and seven runs allowed (six earned). Joey Clemente pitched a scoreless eighth for the Griffins.

Elmhurst wraps up its spring break trip tomorrow with a matchup against Eastern Connecticut State at 10:30 a.m.
