UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio. – The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team hung with John Carroll for three quarters, but the Blue Streaks scored five times in the final 13 minutes to take a 10-5 victory.
After
Mac Harden scored the lone goal of the third quarter, the Bluejays (2-5) headed to the final period tied at five despite lopsided statistics in favor of the Blue Streaks (4-2). John Carroll took the lead just 1:43 into the fourth quarter as Declan O'Grady became the first player to score twice in the contest. Elmhurst kept the deficit at one until halfway through the period when John Carroll scored on three straight possessions, taking its largest lead of the contest and setting up a 10-5 win.
Nick Klenck started the scoring, putting Elmhurst up two-and-a-half minutes into the contest. The Blue Streaks tied the game on an extra-man opportunity and then scored again just over a minute later, forcing Elmhurst to call timeout just eight minutes into the game.
After over four minutes of scoreless play, John Carroll made it a 3-0 run with a goal from Dakota Thomas.
Matt Westhaver chipped into the deficit with his tenth goal of the season off a
Jackson Mandli assist. Less than two minutes later, the Blue Streaks' Colin Rice became the sixth scorer in the quarter and sent John Carroll to a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes.
Elmhurst outscored John Carroll 2-1 in the second period to pull within one at halftime.
Mal Euson and
Dan O'Connell supplied the Bluejay goals, but John Carroll took a 5-4 lead into the locker room.
Despite being outshot 24-6 in the first half, efficient offense (four goals on five shots on goal) and nine saves from
Nick Bonastia kept Elmhurst in the game. John Carroll also won 9-of-11 first-half face-offs and held a 19-8 edge in ground balls.
Harden evened the score at five early in the second half with his team-leading 12th goal of the season and the two teams headed to the fourth quarter tied at five. John Carroll outscored Elmhurst 5-0 in the final period to take the win.
Euson was the only Elmhurst player to record a goal and an assist on the day. Five different Elmhurst players combined for the five goals. Nick Bonasita played a brilliant first three quarters, but a 41-16 shot deficit was too much to overcome. Bonastia finished with 16 saves.
John Carroll held a 16-3 advantage in face-offs and a 37-20 edge in ground balls. Both teams turned the ball over 19 times. Elmhurst converted 12-of-17 clears, while John Carroll finished 14-of-20.
O'Grady scored a game-high three goals for John Carroll, while his teammate Collin Riley was the only other player with multiple goals in the game (two).
Elmhurst travels to Whittier, California, near Los Angeles, for two games this coming week. The trip begins with a neutral site matchup against DePauw University on Wednesday, March 23 at 6:00 Pacific time.
