WHEATON, Ill. – The Elmhurst women's basketball team fell on the road to No. 20 Wheaton 65-43.
Even though Elmhurst (12-10, 6-5 CCIW) limited Wheaton (16-5, 8-3 CCIW) to just 3-of-13 from the field in the first quarter, the Thunder still held a slight lead for much of the opening period. Wheaton shot a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe and took a 16-13 lead into the second quarter.
Wheaton scored the next four points and opened up an eight-point advantage with a 7-2 run to begin the second quarter. Elmhurst went without a basket for almost five minutes, but then scored on back-to-back possessions with layups from
Annette Stidham and
Katie Swanson to cut the deficit to seven. Wheaton scored the final four points of the half to lead 31-20 at the break.
In an offensive struggle, the Thunder made all 14 of their free-throw attempts in the first half, while Elmhurst's bench combined for 11 points in the first 20 minutes.
Wheaton outscored Elmhurst 20-5 in the third quarter and never looked back.
Mikaela Eppard accounted for all five Bluejay points in the third period.
Eppard led the Bluejays with 12 points and seven rebounds, while
Erika Johnson and Stidham both contributed six points. Wheaton's Katie McDaniels (20 points) and Hannah Considine (16 points, 17 rebounds) paced the Thunder who finished the game 18-of-19 from the free-throw line.
Elmhurst looks to snap its two-game losing streak when it hosts North Park this Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 p.m.
