Mikaela Eppard tied the game with four seconds to play, but a Carthage three-pointer at the buzzer sent the Lady Reds to victory 78-75.
Elmhurst (12-9, 6-4 CCIW) trailed by 13 heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Lady Reds 12-6 in the final five minutes. It started with Eppard scoring six straight points to cut the lead to three, which is the closest the Bluejays had been in over 10 minutes. In the final minute, a three-pointer by
Claire Monroe and an Eppard free throw pulled Elmhurst within one and, after Morgan Harris split a pair of free throws, Eppard moved to her left hand and laid in a bucket from the mid-post to tie the game. Carthage (8-13, 4-6 CCIW) advanced a ball with a timeout. Elmhurst trapped Morgan Harris in the corner, but Carthage's leading scorer found Micala Giammarino on the wing who knocked down her only shot of the game to seal the victory.
The teams traded runs in the early going, with both squads leading by at least four in the first quarter. The Lady Reds took control in the second quarter, leading by as much as nine, but three-pointers from
Kalia Summerlin and
Courtney Spencer and a pair of free throws from
Kaela Jones put Elmhurst within two at the half
(35-33).
Carthage once again took control in the third quarter, breaking the game open with a 14-4 run to take a 13-point lead into the third quarter. After the Lady Reds led by as much as 15 in the fourth, Elmhurst clawed their way back before the buzzer-beater sent Carthage to the victory.
Eppard scored a team-high 26 points (9-of-14 from the field, 8-of-9 from the charity stripe) to go along with eight rebounds.
Claire Monroe had one of her best three-point shooting nights of the year, knocking down 4-of-6 and scoring 15 points.
Kaela Jones also contributed double-figures with 11.The Bluejays outrebounded Carthage by 20 (44-24) and knocked down 85 percent (17-20) free-throw attempts.
Morgan Harris scored a game-high 27 points, after finishing with 26 in the first meeting between the teams. Rachel Szydlowski (19) and Mandy Hozzian (14) also reached double-digits for the Lady Reds.Carthage shot 48 percent from the floor and won the turnover battle 17-11. After missing all eight three-point attempts in the first half, the Lady Reds drained 5-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Elmhurst looks to bounce back when they travel to Wheaton College this Saturday, February 6 for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
