ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's basketball team slipped to 3-6 on the season following an 84-66 loss to Buena Vista University.
Buena Vista (5-3) and Elmhurst traded buckets for the majority of the first half before the Beavers built an 11-point cushion at the half. Buena Vista led by just one (30-29) with 5:40 left in the half, but the Beavers used a 14-5 run over the next five minutes to push their lead to double digits at 44-34 before taking a 47-36 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Elmhurst managed to chip the lead down to just seven points with just under nine minutes remaining, but a pair of offensive rebounds by the Beavers led to a Thomas Wisecup three-pointer, pushing Buena Vista's lead back to 10 points. Elmhurst came no closer the rest of the way as Buena Vista pulled away for the 84-66 victory.
Elmhurst shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the floor, including 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from three-point range.
Caleb Mowry lead Elmhurst in the loss with a game-high 23 points, shooting 8-of-17 from the floor.
Jalen Loving added 13 points while
Jake Rhode finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Buena Vista finished the game shooting 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from downtown. The Beavers also controlled the game inside, outrebounding Elmhurst 44-30 and outscoring the Bluejays 38-24 in the paint.
Kennedy Drey led the Beavers in the win with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. David Jeffries added 11 points and eight rebounds while Tim Jeffries scored 12 off the bench. Thomas Wisecup and Sean Morgan totaled 10 points apiece.
Elmhurst hosts Blackburn College on Monday, December 19.
