ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst wrestling team opened up its season with a convincing 35-12 win over Wheaton.
The Bluejays (1-0) won the first seven bouts to take control of the dual.
Anthony Munoz won by forfeit at 125, so the first bout of the day came at 133. In his first match as a Bluejay,
Jared Braun used two four-point near falls in the second period to finish a 15-0 technical fall. Another new Bluejay,
Ronnie Hauser added to the Elmhurst lead by pinning Greg Manfredi in 4:55 at 141.
Leading 23-0 after
Caleb Ramos received a forfeit at 149, the Bluejays put together three consecutive major decision wins at 157, 165, and 174.
Gunnar Hjorth used an early takedowns in the first period to accumulate 2:28 of riding time and then posted a takedown and a two-point near fall to cruise to a 9-1 win.
Tim Noverini led 14-0 after one period and ended up with a 14-2 victory.
Keone Derain scored the final points of the day for Elmhurst, posting two early takedowns and finishing off a 15-5 major decision win.
Wheaton took the final three bouts of the dual. In a tight 184-pound matchup, Elmhurst
Leo Ortiz hung with Jared Fekete, but the Wheaton wrestler took a reversal in third period and hung on for a 2-1 decision.
Mark Miller dropped a 3-0 result to Mikey Swider, the top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds. Wheaton's Max Gierke finished off the dual by pinning
Luis Montoya in 3:10.
