FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Elmhurst College women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season wtih an impressive 70-39 road win at Franklin College.
Elmhurst limited Franklin to just 10 total points between the second and third quarters, while outscoring the Grizzlies 33-10 in the process.Â
Leading by just twp points at 16-14 early in the second quarter, the Bluejays opened up a 22-4 run over the next eight minutes to take a commanding 20-point lead at 38-18. Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter as Elmhurst managed just 10 points, but the Grizzlies shot just 1-of-11 from the field while Elmhurst lengthened its lead to 49-22 after three quarters. Elmhurst led by as many as 36 points in the fourth quarter en route to the 31-point victory.
Elmhurst shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the floor, including 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from beyond the arc. The Bluejays dominated the game on the glass, outrebounding Franklin 43-21. Elmhurst also controlled the paint, outscoring the Grizzlies 30-8 in the lane.Â
Mikaela Eppard led the way for the Bluejays with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Eppard shot 7-of-9 from the floor and added a pair of assists in the victory.
Hannah Lipman added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Bluejays while
Kalia Summerlin finished with 11 points, hitting 4-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from downtown.
Jasmin Bailey added eight points off the bench for the Bluejays while
Kaela Jones also scored eight for Elmhurst.Â
Franklin shot just 29.5 percent (13-of-44) from the field, hitting just 13-of-44 attempts. Riley Achenbach paced the Grizzlies with seven points in the loss.
Elmhurst (1-0) travels to Millikin University this weekend (November 18-19) to take on Westminster and Greenville in the CCIW/SLIAC Challenge.Â
