WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Elmhurst volleyball team improved to 19-10 on the season after splitting a pair of matches against Top-25 opponents at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Tournament.
Elmhurst, ranked 16th in the latest AVCA Division III poll, opened the day with a four-set loss to #22 UW-Oshkosh but bounced back to topple 12th-ranked UW-Stevens Point in five sets.
OSHKOSH 3, ELMHURST 1 - Elmhurst suffered its 10th loss of the season after falling 25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 26-28 to Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
UW-Oshkosh broke open a 9-9 tie in the opening set with an 11-4 run to take a commanding 20-13 lead, but the Bluejays rallied back using an 8-1 run to pull even at 21-21. Leading 24-22, the Bluejays put the set away with a kill from
Hannah Davis.
Oshkosh broke a 12-12 tie in hte second set with a 9-3 run to open up a six-point cushion at 21-15 en route to the 25-18 win. The third set was nearly identical to the second. The Titans broke a 10-10 tie with a 9-3 run to open up a 19-13 lead before putting the set away at 25-19.
The match seemed destined to go to a fifth set, but the Bluejays failed to put away the Titans. Elmhurst built a 19-13 lead before the Titans rallied, pulling to within two points at 23-21. Leading by just a point at 23-22, a kill from
Mel Lundin gave Elmhurst a set point. Elmhurst had four set points, but Oshkosh fought off each one and scored three straight points to close out the set at 28-26 and take the match.
The Bluejays finished the match with a .187 hitting percentage with 53 kills and 26 errors in 162 attacks.
Mary Lawrence powered the Bluejays' offense with 15 kills while Lundin pounded down 10.
Hannah Nimrick and
Hannah Davis added eight kills apiece. Nimrick added 38 assists and 11 digs while
Amy Schryver totaled a team-leading 14 digs.
Tina Elstner led UW-Oshkosh with 19 kills and 13 digs. Nerissa Vogt added 13 kills for the Titans.
ELMHURST 3, STEVENS POINT 2 - Elmhurst needed five sets to score a 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 15-8 win over 12th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Elmhurst scored the firs six points of the opening set before Stevens Point rallied to pull even at 12-12. The score was knotted at 22-all in the first but kills from
Melissa Nava and
Alli Rogers along with an error on the Pointers gave Elmhurst the opening set at 25-22.
The Bluejays led from wire-to-wire in the second, never trailing the Pointers. The Bluejays built a five-point cushion at 22-17 and had a 24-19 lead before a kill from Rogers ended the set for Elmhurst at 25-20.
The Bluejays built a comfortable lead at 16-10 in the third, but Stevens Point stormed back with a 9-3 lead to pull even at 19-19. The Pointers closed the set on a 6-3 run to cut Elmhurst's lead in half.
Stevens Point broke an 8-8 tie in the fourth with an 8-2 run to take a 16-10 lead. Elmhurst came as close as three points at 24-21 but a kill from Gabby Thomas gave the Pointers the set at 25-21.
Elmhurst seized control of the fifth set early. With the score even at 4-4, Elmhurst used a 7-2 run to open up a commanding 11-6 lead. The Bluejays pushed their lead up six points at 14-8 and an ace from Nimrick ended the match for Elmhurst.
The Bluejays hit .263 for the contest with 73 kills and 21 errors in 198 swings. Five players reached double figures in kills. Lundin and Davvis led the way with 16 kills apiece. Nava added 13 kills while Rogers totaled 11. Nimrick finished with a triple-double of 10 kills, 52 assists and 18 digs. Lawrence added seven kills, 11 digs and three blocks in the victory. Schryver totaled team-highs in both digs (31) and aces (four) while
Ani Agbabian added 16 digs.
Elmhurst hosts Millikin University on Wednesday, September 26.
