CHICAGO, Ill. – Eleven different Bluejays scored as the Elmhurst women's basketball team secured its second straight victory over a team atop the CCIW standings, this one a 61-55 win over North Park.
Of the 11 Bluejays, four scored eight points or more with
Mikaela Eppard's 12 and
Kaela Jones' 11 leading the way. Elmhurst (10-7, 4-2 CCIW) also held the CCIW's leading scorer, Liz Rehberger (19.3 points per game), to just 13 points on 3-of-12 from the field.
North Park (13-4, 4-2 CCIW) scored the first seven points of the game as Elmhurst turned the ball over three times in the first three minutes. Despite being cold from the floor, the Bluejays kept themselves in the game with solid free throw shooting early.
Lisa Logan made the team's first basket with 3:39 remaining in the quarter to tie the score at seven. The Vikings once again pulled ahead by seven with a 7-0 quarter ending run that Rehberger sparked with five points.
North Park used the first five minutes of the second quarter to pull ahead by a game-high 12 points at 26-14. Elmhurst once again fought back, this time scoring the final 16 points of the quarter. Over the final five minutes of the half, four Elmhurst players combined for 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Defensively, Elmhurst did not allow a point on two North Park shots and forced seven turnovers.
Claire Monroe wrapped up the run with a layup at the buzzer to give Elmhurst a four-point lead at the break.
The Bluejays did not trail in the second half and opened up a ten-point lead with an Eppard layup. Later in the quarter, a three-pointer by Jones pulled Elmhurst ahead by 14 and the Bluejays led by 12 heading into the final period.
Elmhurst led by double-digits for the first three minutes of the fourth quarter before the Vikings clawed back into the game. Layups on three straight possessions cut into the deficit to six and the Vikings pulled within three with 2:14 to play. After a pair of empty possessions, the Bluejays took the clock from 1:48 to 0:22 with three offensive rebounds, two by
Katie Swanson and one by Eppard. After Jones split a pair of free throws, Rehberger missed a layup and Swanson knocked down two free throws to seal the win.
Elmhurst shot 43-percent from the field and 72-percent from the free-throw line in the win. The Bluejays' bench outscored North Park's reserves 23-7 and Elmhurst won the turnover battle 20-18. Along with her team-leading 12 points, Eppard also topped the Bluejays with six rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
North Park's Soly Roman joined Rehberger with a game-high 13 points, while also grabbing 15 rebounds. Nicole Krukman added 10 points for the Vikings. North Park held a 33-30 edge in rebounding.
Elmhurst looks to continue its winning streak this Saturday, January 23 when the Bluejays travel to North Central. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
