NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Despite strong individual offensive nights, the Elmhurst women's basketball team could not overcome 33 turnovers in a 100-75 loss to North Central.
The Cardinals (9-9, 3-4 CCIW) scored 32 points off turnovers against the Bluejays (10-8, 4-3 CCIW) on their way to the victory.
Both teams struggled offensively early in the first quarter. Almost three minutes into the game,
Michaela Kumer hit a three-pointer to put Elmhurst ahead 3-2, which ended up being the Bluejays' only lead of the contest. North Central led by five at the end of the quarter 19-14.
In the second, North Central pulled ahead by double-digits for the first time with eight straight points. The Bluejays kept pace for much of the quarter, but a 15-6 run gave North Central a 15-point lead at 45-30.
Kalia Summerlin scored Elmhurst's final seven points of the half, including a buzzer-beating jumper, but the Bluejays trailed by 14 at the break. The Cardinals led by double-digits for the entirety of the second half, cruising to their third CCIW victory.
Many Bluejays posted either career or season scoring highs, including
Kaela Jones with a game-high and career-high 20 points. Summerlin also poured in a season-high 10 points in just 11 minutes of action, while
Mikaela Eppard added another double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds).
Julia Madrid, in the first major action of her career, scored six points in 10 minutes and
Jasmin Bailey also knocked down the first shot of her career, a layup off a North Central turnover.
All 15 Cardinals scored in the contest, including three in double-figures. Kimberly Wilson scored a team-high 13, while Miranda Grizzafi and Anita Sterling added 12 and 10 respectively. North Central also won the rebounding battle 51-49.
Elmhurst looks to bounce back when they host Augustana College Wednesday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m.
