ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst volleyball team slipped to 12-5 on the season following a four-set loss to 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Elmhurst, ranked 16th in the latest AVCA Division III poll, dug itself an early two-set hole before rallying and falling 11-25, 15-25, 25-23, 20-25.
Stevens Point, ranked 10th in the latest AVCA Divison III poll raced out to a quick 10-5 lead and then outscored the Bluejays 15-6 the rest of the way en route to a 25-11 win in the opening set.
Elmhurst pulled out to a 5-2 lead in the second set behind three straight aces from
Mel Lundin, but the Pointers, pulled even at 11-11 and then used a 5-0 run to grab a 16-11 lead before pulling away for the 25-15 win.
Elmhurst trailed 16-12 midway through the third set, before mounting a rally and pulling even at 18-all. The Bluejays built a 24-21 lead after a kill from
Alli Rogers, but Stevens Point fought off two straight set points. A bad set by the Pointers gave the Bluejays the third set at 25-23.
Stevens Point raced out to a commanding 11-3 lead in the fourth, only to see the Bluejays respond with an 8-1 run to pull to within a point at 12-11. The Pointers responded with a 5-1 run to extend their lead back to five points. Elmhurst came no closer than three points the rest of the way as Stevens Point closed out the match 25-20.
Elmhurst struggled with its attack, hitting just .031 for the contest with 41 kills and 36 errors in 160 attacks.
Mary Lawrence led the way for the Bluejays in the loss with 13 kills and a pair of blocks. Rogers registered 11 kills while
Hannah Nimrick totaled six kills, 35 assists and 10 digs.
Amy Schryver registered a match-high 31 digs in the loss.
Three players reached double figures in kills to pace the Pointers. Marie Krengel tallied 14 kills while Kelly Cefalu finished with with 13 and Gabby Thomas added 11. Brittany Laffin totaled 31 assists and 10 digs in the victory.
Elmhurst opens CCIW play on Tuesday, September 29, by traveling to Wheaton College.
