KENOSHA, Wis. - The Elmhurst volleyball team ran its record to 9-2 on the season by posting a pair of victories on the first day of the Carthage College Tournament.
Elmhurst, ranked 14th in the latest AVCA Division III poll, opened with a 25-15, 25-22, 25-16 win over Carroll before closing the day with a 25-23, 25-13, 25-17 victory over Bethel.
ELMHURST 3, CARROLL 0 - Elmhurst hit .315 as a squad and totaled seven aces in a three-set sweep of Carroll.
Mel Lundin led Elmhurst with 12 kills while
Alli Rogers and
Mary Lawrence each reached double figures with 10 kills.
Hannah Nimrick added eight kills, 30 assists and eight digs in the victory while Amy Schyver tallied 15 digs to pace the Bluejays.
ELMHURST 3, BETHEL 0 - After a tight battle in the opening set, the Bluejays pulled away in the second and third sets for a decisive three-set victory.
Neither team led by more than four points in the opening set and the score was even at 21-21. Elmhurst trailed 22-21, but pulled level at 23-all. An ace from
Mary Lawrence and a block from
Hannah Nimrick and
Alyssa Olson helped seal the victory for the Bluejays.
The Bluejays raced out to a quick 12-3 lead in the first set and never looked back en route to the 12-point victory. With the score even at 10-10 in the third, the Bluejays won six of the next seven points to build a 17-11 lead before pulling away for the win.
The Bluejays hit .240 for the match with 36 kills and 13 errors in 96 swings. Rogers and Lawrence powered the attack with 11 kills apiece. Lawrence added a team-high five blocks while Nimrick tallied six kills, 22 assists and eight digs. Schryver totaled 18 digs for the Bluejays to lead the defense.
Elmhurst will play fifth-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Wisconsin-Eau Claire on the tournament's second day.
