Bluejay Softball Team Swept by Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Elmhurst softball team's bats went cold while dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Illinois Wesleyan University. The Bluejays were shutout 4-0 in game one and fell 6-1 in the nightcap.

Elmhurst fell to 19-17 on the season and 4-10 in CCIW play. The Bluejays were eliminated from  CCIW Tournament contention in the process.

ILLINOISS WESLEYAN 4, ELMHURST 0 – Elmhurst managed just four hits while dropping the opening contest 4-0 to Illinois Wesleyan.

The Titans grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Katie Caulfield sacrifice fly. Danielle Smith cracked a two-run homer in the third inning to extend the Titans' lead to three runs. Illinois Wesleyan tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning on a Hannah Bowen RBI single.

Bella Masini, Ele Walter, Crystal Marinelli and Mikayla Melone each collected a hit for Elmhurst in the loss.

Tiffany Potthast took the loss for Elmhurst, falling to 7-5 on the season. Potthast surrendered 10 hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings of work. She walked three while striking out one.  Chloe Montgomery picked up the win for the Titans, improving to 16-3 in the process. Montgomery tossed a shutout, allowing just four hits and two walks over seven innings. She struck out four in the win.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 6, ELMHURST 1 – Elmhurst dropped the second game of the doubleheader by a final score of 6-1. The Bluejays managed four hits in the loss.

The Titans grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI groundout from Smith and a run-scoring double from Mary Rankin. Run-scoring singles from Sam Gudat and Laura Bonds in the second inning stakes the Titans to a 4-0 lead. RBI singles from  Caulfeld and Sarah Platt in the third inning put the Titans in front by six.

Elmhurst broke its scoring drought in the fifth inning. Elmhurst loaded the bases with a walk, hit batter and infield single. Brianna Thompson was hit by a pitch to force in a run and put the Bluejays on the scoreboard.

Thompson finished with two hits for Elmhurst in the loss while Marinelli and Ele Walter each collected a hit for the Bluejays.

Stephanie Sturino made the start and took the loss for Elmhurst, allowing eight hits, six runs and three walks over three innings of work. Stefanie Sanidas pitched four scoreless innings of work in relief for Elmhurst. Mackenzie Marquis earned the win for the Titans, tossing a complete game, allowing just three hits and one run over seven innings. She walked five and struck out five.  

Elmhurst plays its final doubleheader of the year tomorrow, April 28, by hosting the University of Chicago at 3:00 p.m.
