ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst baseball team swept a doubleheader from Millikin University, winning the opening contest 7-1 and taking the night cap 12-7.
Elmhurst improved to 12-22 overall and 5-12 in the CCIW with the pair of victories.
ELMHURST 7, MILLIKIN 1 (Game One) – Elmhurst banged out 11 hits and scored seven runs to sink Millikin 7-1 in the opening game of the doubleheader.
Elmhurst grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on
Kalvin Thongchamleunsouk's RBI single. An
A.J. Compton sacrifice fly gave the Bluejays a two-run cushion in the third.
The Bluejays took advantage of three Millikin errors in the sixth inning to score three runs.
Ben Havel and
Zach Tsiodras both drove in runs during the sixth for the Bluejays.
Elmhurst tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on RBIs from Havel and Tsiodras to pull away for the 7-1 victory.
Tsiodras finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs driven in to lead the Bluejays. Havel added two hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair. Thongchamluensouk also collected two hits for the Bluejays.
Justin Theisen picked up the victory for the Bluejays, improving to 3-4 on the season. He scattered four hits and five walks over seven innings of work, allowing just one run in the process. He struck out eight in the contest.
Erik Swanson pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Bluejays.
ELMHURST 12, MILLIKIN 7 (Game Two) – Elmhurst finished the doubleheader sweep of the Big Blue with a 12-7 victory in game two.
Elmhurst scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to take an early lead. RBI singles from
Brandon Kressner, Tsiodras and
Mike Rostine, along with a two-run double from Compton stake Elmhurst to a five-run advantage.
The Bluejays' lead was short lived as Millikin (14-19, 5-12 CCIW) answered back with six runs in the top of the fourth to surge in front.
Elmhurst quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Tsiodras laced a two-run single to center field to put the Bluejays back in front at 7-6. RBI singles from
Reagan McReynolds and Tsiodras in the fifth inning gave Elmhurst a three-run cushion at 9-6, before the Bluejays pulled away for the 12-7 victory.
Tsiodras led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a team-leading four RBI. Compton collected three hits, scored two runs and drove in three in the win. McReynolds,
Brandon Kressner and
Nick Cusumano each collected two hits and drove in a run in the Elmhurst win.
Jeff Guzzi evened his record at 3-3 on the season with the victory from the mound. Guzzi worked seven innings and allowed just six hits and four earned runs. He walked four and fanned four for the Bluejays.
Brennan McClung pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Bluejays to close out the contest.
Elmhurst hosts Millikin in the final game of the three-game series on Monday, April 27, at 7:00 p.m.
