Win Gives Men's Lacrosse CCIW Tournament Birth

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's lacrosse team clinched the No. 4 seed in the CCIW Tournament with a 20-4 victory against Dubuque on Senior Day.

Elmhurst (7-8, 2-3 CCIW) trailed 2-1 in the early portions of the first quarter, but used four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead. The Bluejays dominated the game from there, outscoring Dubuque 15-2 in the final 45 minutes. 

The Spartans struck first as Tyson Svoboda scored off a Britton Harris assist. Elmhurst's Jacob Combron answered three minutes later with 13 goal of the year off a Nick Klenck pass. Dubuque took their final lead of the game when Efrain Rodriguez scored six minutes into the game. 

Elmhurst ripped off seven unanswered goals to take an 8-2 lead. Jackson Mandli, Mal Euson, and Matt Westhaver (twice) scored to wrap up the first quarter. Early in the second, Klenck and Mandli added another point with a goal each. Elmhurst took a 10-3 lead into halftime with a mini 2-1 run with goals from Klenck and Tyler Dailey coming just 11 seconds apart. Both of Klenck's goals came with a man advantage.

The Bluejays outscored the Spartans 9-0 in the third quarter to pull away. Alex Opyd scored three goals in the period, while Combron, and Dailey added to their totals with one goal. Other scorers included Mandli with two, A.J. Weiger, and Brandon Bethran. 

Elmhurst wrapped up the win by splitting the two fourth-quarter goals. Joshua Kramer scored for Dubuque, while Mandli scored his team-leading fifth for the Bluejays. 

Elmhurst out shot Dubuque 55-10 in the contest and owned a 23-5 advantage in faceoffs. Elmhurst was a perfect 18-18 on clears, while Dubuque converted in just 10 of 32. 

Opyd and Dailey scored three goals each, second on the team to Mandli's five, with Combron and Westhaver chipping in two each. Combron also led the Bluejays with four assists on the day. 

Nick Bonastia scored the win for the Bluejays in net, stopping two shots in 37 minutes before being replaced by the Bluejays' lone senior, Jake Acevedo. Kyle Mullins stopped 18 shots in the Spartans' loss. 

The fourth-seeded Bluejays travel to Kenosha, Wis. and take on Carthage College in the semifinals of the CCIW Tournament on Wednesday April 25.
