Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader With Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – After dropping the opening game of a doubleheader to Carthage 11-7, the Bluejays earned the split with an 8-1 victory in the night cap behind Jeff Guzzi's strong pitching performance.

Elmhurst  moved to 8-15 overall and 3-7 in the CCIW with the split.
 
CARTHAGE 11, ELMHURST 7 (Game One) – Carthage used a pair of big innings to score an 11-7 victory in the opening game of the day.
 
Elmhurst built a 3-1 lead after three innings. Zach Tsiodras singled home a run in the first to put the Bluejays in front 1-0. Elmhurst made it 2-0 in the second. Mike Rostine tripled to lead off the inning and scored on A.J. Compton's sacrifice fly. Carthage cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second, but an RBI single from Nick Cusumano gave Elmhurst a 3-1 lead in the third.
 
A pair of big hits sparked a five-run fourth inning for Carthage. Graham Wick tied the game with a two-run homer. Nick Schmidlkofer delivered the second blow of the inning with a bases-clearing, three-run double to put Carthage in front 6-3.

Elmhurst used a pair of home runs to pull even in the sixth inning. Greg Struck cracked a solo blast in the fifth, and Compton smashed a two-run homer in the sixth to knot the score at 6-6.

The tie did not last long as Carthage plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go back in front. Drew Bailey delivered the key hit for the Red Men by belting a two-run home run. Carthage added a run in the eighth to extend its cushion to five-runs before holding on for the four-run victory.
 
Compton led Elmhurst at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Struck finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI while Tsiodras also registered two hits.
 
Bailey, Graham Wick and Matt Rave totaled three hits apiece for Carthage as the Red Men totaled 17 hits as a team.
 
Justin Theisen took the loss for Elmhurst, working 5.1 innings and allowing 12 hits and eight runs (seven earned). He walked three and struck out three in the loss. Josh Daniels notched the victory for Carthage, scattering eight hits and six runs in six innings. He walked two while striking out eight.
 
ELMHURST 8, CARTHAGE 1 (Game Two) – Jeff Guzzi limited Carthage to only six hits and one run in eight innings while leading the Bluejays to an 8-1 win in game two.
 
Elmhurst and Carthage both scored a run in the first, but Guzzi kept Carthage off the scoreboard for the rest of the day.
 
The Bluejays broke the 1-1 tie in the fourth inning with three runs. Cusumano delivered the key hit with a two-run triple to put Elmhurst in front.  Brandon Kressner singled home a pair of runs in the seventh to extend Elmhurst's lead to 6-1. Tsiodras cracked a solo homer in the eighth and a sacrifice fly from Compton in the ninth made the final score 8-1.
 
Kressner, Ben Havel, Reagan McReynolds and Rostine collected two hits apiece to pace Elmhurst's offense in the win.
 
Guzzi improved to 2-2 with the win, tossing eight innings and limiting the Red Men to just six hits and one run. He walked two while striking out three. Daryl Rivera tossed a scoreless ninth inning in relief.
 
Elmhurst hosts Carthage tomorrow (April 12) in the rubber game of the three-game series.
